I dont think they were even near the same intent or hit at all.

But if Miller and the rest of Buffalo want to go back, and refresh this hit, and tell me what they think -

Thank you. That hit by Stafford on Keith is 10 times worse than the Hammer hit. Blindside elbow to the head. This is such bullshit that Hammer is suspended for essentially "hitting too hard".

And Stafford's quote -

Stafford, who has 10 penalty minutes, said his hit was a matter of hard back-checking, not an intent to injure. "I hope he's OK. I'm not trying to hurt anybody," Stafford said. "At the same time, you have to keep your head up if you're going to make a play over the blue line like that."

I didnt realize below the top of the circle was the same as "over the blueline". So dont you have to keep your head up, if you're going to stand on the boards and wait for a pass?
Sorry, but just because Pominville was in a bad position doesn't mean what Hammer did was right or fair. If you look he's literally shoving JP's upper body and head directly into the boards with his shoulder. I believe Claude Lemieux did the same to Draper.
The point Trev is that Pommer turned his shoulder long after Hammer could do anything to keep himself from colliding with him. Hammer expected to hit shoulder to shoulder while playing the puck with his stick. Pommer turned in which caused Hammer's shoulder to hit Pommer's shoulder blade rather than the meat of his shoulder on his upper arm. Which would have made it a 100% unquestionably legal play. As Q said, it should not have even been a penalty.

One screen shot does not show the whole play, by the way.

I certainly agree with Q on this one. NHL has overreacted again. And if fukin Roenick doesn't shut his yap he is such an embarrasment. I had to turn off NHL Home Ice on XM this morning cuz the jackass contradicts himself within 2 minutes of explaining himself. I need to borrow Patrick Roy's Cup rings as ear plugs.

Per NHL.com

Major Penalty – Any player who cross-checks, pushes or charges from behind an opponent who is unable to protect or defend himself, shall be assessed a major penalty. This penalty applies anywhere on the playing surface (see 43.5).

Technically JP should have protected himself and could have defended himself.

It's a tough call really.

Hit wasn't from behind and he definitely saw Hjarlmarsson TWICE and did nothing to brace himself.

We just lost a game because of it. Will we lose another Friday? Our D is fucked without Campbell and Hjarlmarsson.

Poor Seabrook has to skate with no feet Scott.... While Keith gets Leddy.

OMG did Hell actually Freeze Over? We actually agree on something. Roenick is a tool and should have his mic turned off or better yet his jaw wired shut after someone breaks it for him.

See now this is adding to the board! Good post and I agree 100%. Which is why JR will and should never have his number retired.

Have to also consider the Major Penalty subsection of boarding as well. But I agree that it is a tough call, it is just that with all the off season chatter about injuries from hits, the pendulum will tend to the extreme right now. The question is, will the NHL be consistent with this all season...

41.3 Major Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a major penalty, based on the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, to a player guilty of boarding an opponent (see 41.5).

We all know that consistency with both this penalty being called and the suspensions after the fact will not come to fruition.

I listened to the pre-game on the radio and they had the sound clip of Hammer explaining what the NHL told him... he seemed pretty irritated and sarcastic lol.

"Well.... apparently I uh.... hit him too hard, that's what they told me."

He lost...ahem...donated $34 grand for doing his job. I would be pretty pissed off too. That's a lot of money, even for a pro athlete.

Telling a hockey player he hit a guy too hard is akin to telling Peter North he came too much.

WTF!?
