Resigning most those guys wouldn't be best for the team long term on the field or payroll. The one exception may be Contreras

This shouldn't be the problem. That's my point.

The value is developing your own players and knowing which ones to keep and which ones to sell before they hit the wrong end of a regression curve

And they messed up doing that. I still think Bryant, Rizzo and Contreras all can contribute on a winning team. And that's not going to happen because of $$$

every team has a budget to work within. Overpaying for mediocre talent eats into that budget. Can the cubs absorb that hit better than most? Sure. But it still hurts

My point is I wouldn't want to pay for past performance

And my point is I still think Bryant, Rizzo and Contreras can be key pieces on a winning team again.

I wouldn't pay Baez anywhere close to what the numbers are. The other three, I'd pay. That's just me though.

I would extend Wilson. Both way catchers are rare. Amaya is far more likely to flame out than do what Wilson has.

Sure. I don't disagree that it doesn't hurt. At the same time, it's frustrating that they are in this position. If you think the on-field performance is bad, alright I get that. But to me, it feels like the Ricketts knew they were selling no matter what and it was based on $$$.

right. But other teams know this too. So if the plan is to re tool/re build then in order to get the type of prospects necessary to do it, you have to give up the quality of players to get those prospects

oh I agree it’s been ricketts preference to be a seller this year. I don’t think that’s really even debatable

At this point, you're not going to get the package for Bryant you could have gotten. He's a half season rental. Their trade pieces aren't going to pull in the legit prospects, IMO. But I hope I'm wrong..

That's my point in this. That's what frustrates me the most and led to my comment of them being happy about this series.

I've accepted they are going to sell. I just don't think they should even be in a spot to choose.

ehh maybe. But look at it this way. Team A shows interest in KB. Team B in Team A’s same division sees it happening and decides they can’t afford for Bryant to end up on Team A, so they up the offer for KB.

bidding wars can be created out of fear as easily as out of need/desire

The real key is the cubs putting these guys on the market long enough to create the bidding war

The smart decision is.

DFA Jake. Promote Williams.

Move Thompson to AAA and put him in the rotation.

Push Steel into Iowa's rotation.

Push Hendricks/Davies/Williams/Alozay/Mills until mid July.

By mid July Steel and Thompson should be ready to start. Trade Davies and shut down Alzolay.

That takes care of the rotation.

Line up.

I wouldn't sit on Bryant. Pack him and Kimbrel ASAP and get a return worth a darn.

Promote Leeper and let the pen sort itself out.

They have Wisdom at 3B, Joc in LF, Happ CF and Heyward at RF. No issue losing Bryant now.

Rizzo I would field offers. But I would sit on that. Let Duffy and Bote get done with rehab starts.

Baez only if they get a decent offer. He might take a QO at this point vs hitting the open market at reduced value

I hope you're right. And that's ideal then... but who knows..

We need a team desperate for a closer to pay for Kimbrel. I’ll drive Bryzzo to the bus station

I mean you'll get one legit prospect. Look at the Machado trade... they got Diaz in that deal who was a top 100 guy. The question is more can you get more than that.
