Bryant should get some more votes now. I think Arrenado had taken the lead

If that's the analysts opinion I think it is fairly dumb. The cubs are a team that is going to play a lot of 1 run games because they are a good team. And they are going to lose a lot of 1 run games because they aren't going to get blown out. In other words, unless you assume they are going to win most if not all of their games they are going to lose a lot of tight games. As for piling on, you might not be entirely wrong though I think your reasoning is off. I think it's more of a case that when the cubs are playing well they will walk a lot and force into a teams bullpen and then feast on that bullpen. When they aren't hitting well they deal more with starters who tend to be better pitchers.

So true. Win by 4, and lose by 1, and some guru knocks you. Dumb.

This is Why they should trade for Chapman. Swear seeing Jake walk 5 guys in 5 innings then have to deal with a shakey MR. You are going to start crying is anyone but Wood/Strop/Rondon enter.

If the Yanks want Vogelbach. And he has 14 HR's and hitting .300. you have to do it. Even on a rental. Who knows they may pay out on him if he stabilizes the pen and pushes them to the series.

All I do know is they are playing with fire right now. They have to get a shut down guy in the pen.

I don't think anyone anywhere would mind Vogelbach going for a Chapman rental.

Setting the bar a bit low there with Vogelbach you know? I'm pretty sure he wouldn't even be the main piece in a trade for any of those players. Additionally, don't really see how Chapman solves the problem of Arrieta pitching 5 innings. Chapman isn't going to be a multiple inning reliever for the cubs. He'd either be the closer or set up guy. And even if that pushes say Strop back an inning it doesn't really do much to solve the 6th.

No bullpen pitcher can solve a starter going 5.

But Chapman in 9th, Rendon in 8th, Strop in 7th really shortens a game. Hammel and Hendricks starts are safe.

Rumor is that Chapman isnt a good cultural fit for this team.

This year he is at .309/.425/.564...15 HR's. 59 SO and 47 BB. That is numbers that Schwarber was pulling last year. He gets a bad wrap because his D is limited. But at 1B it is minimized. 4 errors thus far. As far as a hitter goes his BB:SO are pretty close to 1:1 and the power came back this year.

So ya he could become a masher in Yankee stadium where the park favors LH hitters. Give him a few years to adjust because the hitting talent is there. Those numbers are real and is in line as he has always has done. If it was not for the Rizzo trade we would be hyped about him. Given Bryant can man 1B and Baez at 3B there is no real need for him this year.

Considering it is a rental. How much is he worth? By the deadline Vogelbach could be looking at 20 HR's and well that is a bunch of power from the left side.

On the 6th. Well you would hope that the starters would get there outside of a hick-up here or there....Jake.... but that is why you rotate guys with who is hot in Iowa. There are plenty of MR options on the team in Iowa. Add to it the main MR would be Cahill. He is that guy you hope can bridge the gap to the 7th. Then as back up you go with the best match up. Edwards figures it out he becomes a asset here.

This is all about the playoffs. Nobody really wants to see Cahill.

I, for one, would not be hyped for a 1st baseman who can't play D. It's way more than his own errors. It's about saving IF errors. Bad D kills! We have seen it for decades.

His ERA is not bad at all. Your first option is to get the starter into the 7th but he is not a bad fall back plan.

But what I see as the best option is using Chapman like Marmol was used in 2007. Send him in when you need a shut down. That could be any inning. Not just the 8-9. Many game are decided before then.

I believe it is over blown. 4 errors is not killing anyone. Yes you could go range factor but that is now what you look at out of a 1B. You look at his O.

If it was 3B I would agree. That is a spot you need quality. 1B is more about a big target to throw at and a big bat. If the D is throwing dirt balls well...

He has worked hard on his D. Its not near as bad as it was when he was 18. The guy is an all around hitter. Its a shame we dont have a place for him because his approach is exactly what the Cubs love. He also uses all fields and is not pull happy or he would be yanking more home runs, but thats how he keeps his K's down. He is only 23 and left handed power bats are coveted.

Also, the Yankees would take him in a heart beat. ARod is done. He cant hit for shit. They are old and lack youth with bats.

I mean look I like Vogelbach as a hitter but most people think he's a hard no on anything but a DH. And you know as well as I do the Yankees starting price would be what the Phillies got for Ken Giles. If you want to argue a little less because he's a rental that's fine and I'd agree. But most if not all of the prospect type places don't even have him as a top 100 prospect and the Phillies got 3 plus Mark Appel for Giles. So, at the very least I think you'd be talking McKinney plus him and maybe another lessor guy and that's probably a low estimate on what they can get.

As for what he adds, I honestly think it's over kill and I've said this for awhile. If you're getting into situations where you need 3 lock down pitchers(Strop, Rondon and whomever) you have bigger issues. What the cubs need is someone who's good not great. And sure you wouldn't turn down great if the cost is right but when is the cost right in July for any player? You'd frankly probably get as much value out of a lefty specialist. If Grimm gets going like he has in the past your 7th-9th is covered already and even if he doesn't you may have that covered with Edwards. Wood has a wOBA of .228 against righties. Cahill is at .258. So they give you two strong options vs righties. The problem is Wood also happens to be your only real option outside of Rondon against lefties at .259 wOBA. Cahill and Strop are ok at .288 and .296 respectively but obviously you don't want to use them in that capacity.

I just think why would you pay Chapman prices when you can land Fernando Abad who's got a .139/.162/.257 triple slash against lefties or Sean Doolittle(.146/.170/.304) or Fernando Rodney(.122/.265/.171)....etc. I could name probably 5-10 more guys like them who you can use as a dominate guy against lefties. That then frees you to use Wood whenever you need to and allows you to play match ups better since you actually have someone other than Wood to get lefties out. That effectively accomplishes the same thing that getting Chapman/Miller does.

A first baseman can make a huge difference defensively without any errors of his own.
