He has already said he wouldn't object going back to the Yankees and they have stupid money, plus they hope to be relevant in 2018
Yankees just dumped salary for a bunch of prospects
Be surprising if they drop stupid money for him to return and close for a team that rebuilding

Betancis their closer now

Yea he probably going to test the market as well as he should
All I'm saying is the Cubs are able to talk to him until he does
and unless a team like the Dodgers go overboard on an offer with years and money..
The Cubs have a good chance to retain him if they want too with a decent offer

Chapman at 15 million kills the Cubs future flexibility to pay guys. If you wanted to pay a reliever that much, you should have simply gone after Miller who is 95% (at worst) of what Chapman is and costs about 60%. Hell, they're paying Wood/Richard 8.2 million this year so they could have replaced those two guys with Miller/arb guy and paid a million more. THAT's being a good GM.

To be perfectly honest, the Chapman deal felt like an ownership move to help ease concerns in the fan base who was concerned over that terrible stretch of baseball.
How that..
Most the prime players including Rizzo and Bryant don't become FA til after 2020..

I believe 2020 is when they get their new TV deal

I'm not saying offer Chapman crazy money but they can afford paying him 15 to 18 for 4 or 5 yrs if they choose..

I believe Wood and Strop are off the books this year. Back fill with Zas and Pena and use that savings towards Chapman.

Rondon will be the 8th inning guy. As far as the rest? Cahill is making too much not to start. Montgomery not 100% on board yet. I believe the Farm can cover his spot cheaper. Rest are cheap.

Basically pay for Chapman and Rondon. If Grimm gets back to last year's form them give him his arb for the main 7th inning. Pena and Edwards as Righties and Zas and let the 2nd LH spot be a battle. Think there is at least 2 guys that fill as a LOOGY.

Just thinking if Schwarber played all year up to or close to expectations, how awesome would it of been to watch him Bryant and Rizzo all year hitting homers and driving in runs

I hope offense isn't done scoring

Grimm and 2 rookies in pen after Cahill who struggling

Wood and Edward used yesterday so their if necessary
Be nice to save them for tomorrow

Chapman should be out after 2 days straight and week he had

I wouldn't mind seeing them give Montgomery a couple of more starts with an eye toward 2017. If they get him right as a starter that would dramatically improve their positioning going forward since he and Hendricks would give them two young arms and Lester would be around awhile.

They would have to decline Hammel's option then. I'm doubting Montogomery would equal Hammel.

Montgomery may not stay in Cubs rotation
With an off-day next Thursday, Cubs manager Joe Maddon suspects that Saturday's starter, Mike Montgomery, won't have a permanent spot in the rotation. However, he still thinks Montgomery's long-term future may be as a starter.

No they wouldn't. You could either A) trade Hammel which given the lack of pitching on the FA market he would be very desirable at $10 mil or B) you can let them fight it out and if Hammel wins the job Montgomery goes back to a swing guy in the bullpen. Fact remains you need more than 5 starters during most seasons. Someone usually gets hurt.

Wouldn't hurt, they need to figure out how to add some depth and young arms in system..

Not much in FA this year, so unless their gonna make some trades in off season for arms or break the bank for sale or Baumgartner next year off season..

Gonna have to stretch out some guys they have and see what they got.

My assumption is that he's next year Clayton Richard but who has a better ability to get lefties out. Then if anything happens to the starters, they'll stretch him out.

I would be highly shocked if any of the five Cubs guys are gone.

Really the year to look to is 2018 when Hammel, Lackey are likely gone due to retirement and Jake is a FA.
