Meh. They could do a few things.
I'm down with Rizzo leading off.
Boras just spoutted off on Nick's pay day bull shit and no discounts for the Cubs. So you might as well forget him.
That said Bryant should make 16M. Might as well sit on him then.
But with Rizzo leading off they 'need' to replace him. Schwarber and his .230 BA is a inning killer. Heyward doesn't scare anyone.
Baez and Nico are going to be set up the middle.
So the weak link is replacing Nick in the OF and they will need a LH bat to balance. Happ is another meh option. Schwarber, Happ and Heyward in the same line up is a inning killer.
So the outside the box method adds a SH but really doesn't solve the missing part. And Almora is not that guy.
So IDK honestly what they will do. Maybe it is better to just sign a low-ball guy and target a TOR.
I just figure those bats I mentioned give them a respectable lineup that can still be competitive on short term contracts (not including Castellanos) in a bridge year. The team needs to be reshaped to truly compete and to do that we need to move big pieces (Bryant, Contreras). I don’t think Bryant is part of the issue with this team, but I do think he can be part of the solution in the parts we can bring in.
The bats I’ve targeted are obviously contact hitters. The year we won it all was with our lineup running up starters pitch counts early and often. This team doesn’t run up pitch counts anymore and can’t make contact, so we have to improve one of those aspects.
I don’t have specific trade scenarios like you, but I’d think Contreras and Bryant could bring back some serious prospects that could contribute soon. Schwarber likely could help get a couple dominant bullpen arms. Then we have a handful of prospects I expect to make an impact in the next couple years (Davis, Amaya, Hoerner, Alzolay, Marquez).
I think if we make the right moves next year would be a bridge year which we’d be competitive but likely not a contender. 2021 would be like 2015 and after that we could be a legit contender year in and out.
