Without looking up stats, mainly because I cant now

Im going to guess these guys in the lineup are the biggest reason why they have trouble scoring with RISP/men on base the last month or so.

Zobrist
Heyward
Montero/Ross
Russell ( though he has had a couple big hits)

Those guys seem to come up a lot with runners on and well we know how the results end up most of time

That is because Fowler, Bryant and Rizzo hold the highest OBA's. The guys that follow will get opertunites.

I was thinking:

Fowler
Bryant
Rizzo
Baez
Heyward
Contreras
Montero
Pitcher
LaStella

As the main line up with Russell (IF) Zobrist (OF) used to give days off. These 2 have been struggling of late. Heyward just makes too much to bench at this point.

Think it's more a case of when not if. Don't really see a logical reason that a 26 year old would just entirely fall off. Maybe it's tomorrow things click. Maybe it's during the playoffs. Maybe next year. Regardless, the cubs he still provides elite defense in the meanwhile and despite the hand wringing among cubs fans they are still the best record in baseball. If he gets going the offense could really take off.

I would certainly hope it's a matter of if.

He's a brilliant defender and I love watching him out there, but I haven't been this un-confident in a player at the plate in awhile

There is a reason why the Cubs are the worst team in baseball for leaving runners and it gets more painful by the day. There wouldn't be such a big stink over their pitching...trades, call ups or what not, if they were a bit more consistent in the run scoring dept. Sure, when they do score its comes in bunches but it just doesn't happen enough. They could definitely use a nip and a tuck at their situational hitting. A few hit and runs called by the manager wouldn't hurt either.
Probably cause no one on the team can bunt or hits sac fly?

It's time to get Bryant out of the two hole and drop him down to a spot more conductive to driving in runs. Drop Contreras lower as well, maybe even give him a day off. Against Shields I'd go..

Fowler CF
LaStella 3B
Rizzo 1b
Bryant LF
Zobrist DH
Baez 2B
Heyward RF
Russell SS
Montero C

Baez is going to need to get regular playing time. He has been a stud since June. His wrc+ is up to 114 and his ops has been close to .900 for two months. Add his defense and great base running.

Did you ever both to look it up? Didn't think so. There's only one team in the National League that gets a lot of SF's...that's Washington with 42. Everyone else is in the 20's. It's not the 1960s where hitters choke up to try and make contact with a runner on third. Whether that's right or wrong is not my call....that's just the way the game is played these days. Nothing is going to change that.

Yeah, I just looked at his numbers again today. Those are not part-time player numbers.

I did not like the Zobrist signing at the time and I like it even less now. It would have been great to do the off season over. Not sign Zobrist and Lackey and get Cueto or Zimmerman instead. That is what I wanted them to do. Baez could make Russell a trade piece.

My point...

Their getting opportunities and not coming through for most part..

Even Contreras, though he been slumping a bit Avg. wise has been getting on base (18 game streak)

Looks as if he getting steady time at 2B now with Zobrist playing OF more..
Be interesting to see what happens if they do get that LH bat like Reddick if Zobrist starts seeing less PT for Baez.

He plays the hardest 27 outs on the team. Guy loves to play. They see it.

Pretty sure when Theo was looking into long term starting pitching Baez's name came up and ended the talks.

I'm feeling if they trade for Reddick Baez will start at 3B vs LHSP and move around on other days.

I believe what they wanted was a 3/4/5 of Rizzo/Bryant/Schwarber and adding Riddick makes it Rizzo/Bryant/Riddick as the core of the line up. This pushes Zobrist into the 2 hole full time and let's Baez move around to play the match ups.

That said I feel the natural trade chip becomes Soler for Riddick. Doubt we will hear complaints about that.

Get guys on base, leave guys on base

Can't anyone beside Rizzo and Bryant get a big hit and drive in runs...

Haven't looked at standing after 50 games when cubs were 35-15, but the rest of NL must be pretty mediocre then and now for cubs to go 24-24 since and still have best record by a couple games

At this point we have to bat Heyward 8th or 9th. He's devastating to us. I realize he's a gold glove caliber defender - but so what? He's killing us.

We acquired Chapman, which is good. But every single night it's stranding runs over and over.

I see glaring holes that will be tough to over come in October.
