Welp, looks like Cards are on their way to winning another game. Make that 18-4 in August.

Yep. Firing Matheny was the best move that they've made all year

Fans don't seem to understand the value of good defensive SS's.

Poor IF defense is the reason St Louis is not winning this division. But Cub fans want only offense. The Cubs built for decades based on offense and lost. They now have a solid defensive team and have a WS win and lots of success, and fans clamor for offensive players.

Murphy will hit, and kill you on D. Russell will play great D, and not hit nearly as well. Fans will think Murphy is a star and Russell is a bum. Same argument with our non-framing catcher. Absolutely killing us....quietly. Most fans can't see it.

Not to be too down on Murphy or Contreras. Just trying to point out (for the 100th time, admittedly) that defense matters as much as offense.

Im not gonna disagree that defense is important but i totally disagree about Murphy defense gonna kill them so it doesn't matter if he hits..
Cubs have just won 3 in a row with Murphy jump starting the offense at the lead off spot going
6 for 14 3 r 2 rbi
His defense was far from killing them..
His bat will help them win way more games, then his defense will lose them..

Addison Russell has a steady glove and all on defense but his bat was anemic and was doing nothing to help the team win games ..

Yes defense is important and a great play here and there can be the difference in a game once or twice a week, but constantly going ofer and leaving runners on base can hurt a team chances to win every night..

Willson Contreras a bum and killing them? Not even close
He shuts down any game plan of stealing bases and shortens the leads of baserunners more then any catcher i can remember...
He not even in the ballpark of nad defensive catchers

Does corking your bat even give you any advantage?

It's been disputed but from what I've read, it doesn't necessarily help hit homers but could help with base hits

The value of "good defensive short stops" is going to decline a bit as more focus is placed on putting the ball in the air.

Yep, if current trends continue, what we're in for is a game with 80% strikeouts and 15% fly outs, with 5% ground outs.

I can't imagine a more boring brand of baseball. If this is where analytics is taking us, fine -- analytics would also show that a good spitballer has an advantage, were the spitball not against the rules.

I'm not looking forward all that much to baseball becoming strike 'em out or fly 'em out, very little else. I *like* seeing a good running game; it's entertaining to see Schwarbs trying to steal bases. I dislike seeing seven or eight people in the infield, and umpires who are so fooled by pitchers' misdirections that they have to rely on the catcher's pitch framing to make their ball and strike calls, as well.

I don't know what kinds of rule adjustments will need to be made to bring us back from the brink of the fallacious concept "80% strikeouts is an entertaining game", into which the pitch framing vs. electronic strike zone argument plays... all I know is that the business of baseball will lose a ****-ton of customers if the trend continues and we get a basically much more boring brand of baseball as a result.

YMMV.

I miss the days of starting pitchers throwing 7+ Innings regularly and Vince Coleman/Henderson stealing 80+ bases in a year.
Watching Maddox induce ground ball and fly balls was like watching an artist paint.
Station to station baseball is boring to watch.
Watching Dusty Baker's Cubs were painful--the lineup was a bunch of Homers with no Marges to set the table. The 2005 White Sox were a beauty to watch, they could beat you in a variety of ways--told my buddies in the summer that year that would waltz to a World Series victory.

No. Contreras' framing has only cost the Cubs between 8 and 14 runs this year. His 111 wRC+ and 4 DRS make up for it. At worst it's a wash, and in a typical season where he's hitting better he's a major net positive.

Totally agreed. And as always, I get annoyed when people say "Contreras is killing us, he can't frame pitches well enough."

Okay, then, how about this: the inability of our pitchers to effectively find ways to junk up the ball with foreign substances without getting caught is what's killing us. Obviously, the Astros' pitchers have all come up with a way to junk up the ball and throw spitters at will (and boy, is Will getting tired of being thrown at... ;) ), therefore it's not a matter of playing the game according to the rules, it's a matter of who is best at cheating. Right?

You don't need to worry about base runners if your pitch framing/pitch calling is good. ;)

wow, do you think one day we will be able to see Bote start a game after he has a walk off home run? Happ starting at 3B today.

Happ is hitting 1.000 against their starter, three hits in three appearances against. You sort of have to respect that kind of thing, at least until it changes.

Hamels and Murphy could end up being the best thing to happen for this team...
