Keeping track of potential mid season promotions.

Early predictions:

2B stays locked this year. May get held back a year.
3B gets a bump up in the Org with Vitters moving up to Chicago. Valbuena may get moved to 2B.
SS gets a bump up with Alcantara going to Iowa. Baez goes to Tenn.
1B Vogelbach get a promote up to Daytona. No legit 1B there. No other movements.
C No eye catching prospects. No early moves.

OF Plenty of movement here.
AAA Bog should get promoted after the trade deadline with Silva getting promoted to Iowa. Soler gets promoted to Tenn in a chain effect. Shoulders most likely get put into a OF role in Daytona at this point.

Ha and Szczur not sure yet. Might end up playing it out for the year in Tenn. Same with Almora. Not enough AB at the moment. Still with that start he seems to be over matching his competition. I can see Daytona to keep the hitting core together.

Pitching I don't expect much movement.

Junior Lake Back in Action at Fitch Park
James Sneed roped a two-run single and Ryan Dalton followed with an RBI single to highlight a two-out three-run rally in the top of the 3rd inning, and Tyler DeLoach tossed 3.2 IP of hitless shutout relief with seven strikeouts, helping the Angels defeat the Cubs 4-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #4 in Mesa, AZ.

Junior Lake (fractured rib cage rehab) saw his first game action since March 6th, playing 3rd base for five innings and getting five AB.

Lake batted once in each of the first five innings, going 1-3 with a single and two walks. He also was retired on a 1-3 comebacker to the mound and was called out on strikes. In addition, he was caught stealing after reaching base on the single.

Ex-Minnesota Twins switch-hitting C-1B-3B-PH Jose Morales also returned to action today after missing almost six weeks with a strained hamstring. He went 0-3, and knocked-in the Cubs lone run with a F-7 sacrifice fly.

The 30-year old Morales was signed as a minor league free-agent last month and reported to Extended Spring Training to get into playing shape, but promptly pulled a hammy in his very first EXST game on April 19th. He has been restricted to limited activity (essentially just BP and "sim" games) ever since. Once he is deemed ready to move up, he will likely be assigned to AAA Iowa.

Alcantara and Villanueva went yard tonight for the Smokies scoring the only 3 runs in a rout. That is Alcantara's 8th HR and he is 5'-10" and only weighs 160 LBS. He also played 2B tonight which is probably where he needs to be.

By his split totals, I think he needs to abandon the switch hitting and stick to just batting left handed. He is horrible from the right side of the plate, and we all know that the Cubs haven't done well at the major league level against lefties. No need to add to it.

He has a .303 Avg, .377 OBP and a .905 OPS from the left side, 15 SB's, and he is only 21. He could be a sleeper for 2B in the future.

Some quotes by Dave Keller on Baez lately.

“That’s a beautiful thing,” Keller said, “when you get up there and you have your balance and you swing at good pitches. That gives him a chance to get his ability out there.”

“He has plenty of power and plenty of bat speed and he’s been patient and he’s been getting good pitches to hit.

“He hasn’t been chasing pitches out of the strike zone and he’s been keeping himself under control. He’s taking nice, tension-free swings. When that happens, the ball jumps off his bat.”

Problem is:

Top prospect Javier Baez was 5-for-6 with three doubles, a home run and six RBIs in Class A Daytona's 14-5 win over Brevard County. McLeod said there has been no discussions about promoting Baez or another top prospect, Jorge Soler. Baez was batting .277 while Soler, who hit his eighth home run on Saturday, was batting .295.

"We haven't had those conversations yet," McLeod said Sunday. "We'll let them force us to have those conversations."

• The Cubs are happy with their new affiliation this year with Kane County. The team moved its low Class A team from Peoria to Kane County.

"It's working out great," McLeod said. "When they've had their day games [at home], we've had the opportunity to go down and watch the 11 a.m. game, and be back in the office at 2:30. It's been nice and I think they've enjoyed the affiliation with us."

Baez and Soler get most of the attention, but McLeod said he's been impressed by first baseman Dustin Geiger, who was batting .311 and recorded his fifth multi-hit game in his last 10 on Saturday.

"He's been really steady under the radar and he probably gets lost in Baez, Soler being in the lineup there," McLeod said. "He's a kid who had a tremendous month this past month. He's young, too, for that league. He's done very well."

I agree with Geiger he has broken out this year.

Over all I expect the progression to be slow with the farm. They promoted Baez to Daytona last year with the injury to Alcantara.

They just promoted Chad Nobel to AA then Yaniel Cabezas to Daytona. So there has been some movement of lesser players going on.

But over all unless some one either gets traded out at the major league level or we see a injury I don't expect any fast promotions. Theo's crew seems to be more methodical about how they handle the farm.

On Jackson: 1 day means little.

Last 10 days: .242/.316/.455
Year Avg: .245/.327/.404

Not much change.

He has to prove he is constant vs hot 1 day and blows his load for the month then.

Rather have a boring player who produces daily vs another "Talented" underachiever.

Junior Lake doubled, walked and scored two runs, Jose Morales singled twice, walked, and scored two runs, and Carlos Penalver stroked a two-run double and a single and scored a run, but one squad of Diamondbacks ralliied to score four runs with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to tie one squad of Cubs 7-7 on Quail Field, and RHP Alexander Santana retired the first nine men he faced, Francisco Sanchez singled twice, knocked-in a run, and scored another, and Mark Malave singled twice and walked, but the other squad of D'backs rallied to score one run in the 7th to tie the game and three more in the 8th to take the lead, defeating the Cubs 5-2 on Whirlwind Field, in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader played this morning at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Junior Lake (fractured rib cage rehab) played CF for six innings and batted four times (once every-other inning), going 1-3. He bounced out 5-3 in the 1st inning, drew a walk and scored a run on the Carlos Penalver RBI double in the 3rd, belted a double (his 6th two-bagger in his last three games) into the left-centerield alley with two outs in the 5th, and bounced into a 5-2 FC with a runner at 3rd base and one out in the top of the 7th, before scoring on a Yasiel Balaguert RBI triple.

In EXST Cubs roster news, C-1B-3B Steve Clevenger has completed the Extended Spring Training portion of his rehab, and has been moved-up to AAA Iowa.

Clevenger was placed on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL with a strained oblique on April 14th, and will not be eligible to be reinstated until June 13th.

In eight Cactus League Extended Spring Training games (34 PA), Clevenger hit 355/412/516, with five doubles and seven RBI, and 3/2 BB/K.

Maybe Stewart is re-learning to hit now. Maybe he will get hot and get called up and bring some offense to the shitty Cubs team.... But probably not.
