Matching to keep Hammer was a steal for sure but at that time, I think most of us wanted Neimi back instead.

I've never known if that was accurate or not. I certainly wasn't in that group, but I was a guy upset Neimi was getting the call over Crawford in the beginning of 09-10. I think I was biased and liked Crawford seeing his shutout vs Detroit in one of his first few NHL games and seeing he preformed for Rockford well.

I'm a big fan of the Detroit model too. Oddly they have some contrast to where they seem to not be well off enough to do it anymore. They did it with Nyquist and he's playing fantastic now, but a guy I expected them to do with in the stick handling youtube sensation Jurco, instead he's a rare for them 21 year old NHLer. And it isn't like Jurco is putting up stellar play.

Idk, maybe people have different standards for ready. I don't judge a guy coming up and playing a bit at a fine level as a ready everyday NHL guy when I don't need to bank on him being a ready guy.

Yes, and who's to say McNeil, Dandault and Clendening aren't ready? They've all been given call ups and stepped in on certain games and done fine.

I didn't think Clendening played all that great outside of the PP for the Blackhawks. He needs to improve his defensive game.
I've been a fan of Danault's two way game but he was a step slow in playing for the Blackhawks. I still like his future.
McNeill has certainly turned it up this year and would have likely been the call up over Danault had he not been injured. His issues have stemmed from consistency. I wouldn't mind seeing him up if needed.

These three guys are still prospects though and still have flaws that need to be fixed until they are consistent NHL players. You fix those flaws down on the farm. They are getting close, but I wouldn't take them over anyone else right now - minus Runblad, but the waivers are the reason why he is still up.

I'm rooting for all the prospects...but I'm not going to jump for joy just because they are doing well in the AHL.

The hawks have shown that the solid defense lead by the two future HOFers.... can make pretty much any goalie in front of them look like a HOFer themselves. Niemi, Razor, Crow, now Darling and Raanta... only the completely drunk off his ass Khabi (the second time around) couldn't be saved by this D. You may have 3 goalies now but you don't move any of them because I guarantee you one of them comes down to earth and you'll need more than two throughout the year anyway with injuries sickness and now the mumps going around. Wasn't Salak supposed to be the future at one time... it changes fast for goalies. At least we got Frolik in that deal too... for nothing.

Detroit model... what's all this talk about us using the detroit model... where could the Hawks have got that from?

Gotta thank Scotty for Kruger. He helped out with that one...was one of his first assists to the franchise. Surround yourself with winners if you want to win, even if in a small role. Rocky has done well of that.

I understood that you were alluding to Scotty there...just decided to go off of it and talk about the Kruger steal that he helped with.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
No way is TT on that 2nd line as Center. You'd have a better chance of McNiel being there and TT playing on the Wing. Richards could possibly stay another year and you have left Mcneil off completely.

Hossa will also be on the JT line, 88 on the second. TT could be the odd man out if he doesn't pick play up.

S
Still could theoretically work depending on what depending on what Richard's asking price is. If TT is the odd-guys out that's an extra what, 7-8k from 1.5M (so 2.2M) that the 'hawks can use.

McNeill at that point was the 13Fwd (unless I mistyped), which means he could supplant someone.

The point was making the numbers work.
Under the cap...but not a cup contender. That's the worry. The forward depth is atrocious and the defense takes a big step back. It has 2011 written all over it.

Also - if the Blackhawks trade Sharp and Bickell, have to imagine that there will be some new blood in the NHL lineup from those trades.

All is real hard to predict right now and probably the most you can predict with what is in the card right now. Hell, maybe the Blackhawks surprise us all, trade Crawford and roll with Raanta/Darling. I don't suggest it, but it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibilities.
As for it being a contender--of course not. No team is going to have that big of changes to the lineup without it being a dark horse for the cup contender, and IMHO there's no way to make the salary work with the 'hawks still being one. The depth will be shallow as the farm is basically restocked.

If Sharp and Bickell are traded it's not about new blood, it's about freeing cap. The only way that works is if "the new blood" that comes in is under approx 1M+prospects. In other words, we'd need to be getting a thios-year Saad (less than 1M/playing closer to 3M) to work.

As for Dr. Craw, Trading him accomplishes nothing. The team D will take a hit no matter who goes and if Raanta/Darling can't step up to Crawford's level it hamstrings the team long-run, and if they can step up to Crawford's level, they'll be commanding 8.7%/6M+ You might as well let Crawford ride and keep a known quanitity in net.
Any known quantity netminder woyld take away from cap needed.

Lord didn't put Clendening in there nor do I think Kruger will get that much money.

Easily could have 2-3 left over in cap space with that team to sign someone else or a quality youngster to come in.

I high-balled a lot of "returning" salaries. I figure if Saad commands any more than 4M you let him walk. I figure if Kruger commands amy more than 3M, you let him walk. Both are RFA and you take the picks. In that case you keep Sharp.
Bickell has been invaluable, priceless, the last two playoffs, how do you move him?

His game seems taylored to playoff hockey when phycicality increases, he shines. I'd be scared shitless to lose him and see what we are in playoffs without a forward that hits.
Kinda like how "we could never recover from losing Byfuglien in the playoffs?" (I know I was not a member here in 2010-2011, but that was bandied around all over the interwebs as well). Bickell in the reg. season is mostly dead weight and in a cap world, you can't keep him. I'd much rather have Saad sucking those 4M and getting, like RK said, McNeill or another FWD that hits on the cheap.

In summation, I figure the 'hawks need to drop about 10M of salary, and many of the "fill-ins" have to be making 1M or less to work. Bickell's the obvious choice. Keith and Hossa have the dreaded "Recapture" clause. Going forward team D will be a bit more important than team O, thus Seabs in his contract year will be valuable. Crawford provides stability in the crease, so he stays, thus Sharp, who could be mitigated defensively by Saad, will be the easiest to lose.

One? I've never seen one team get so many good puck bounces in one series than the Kings got last year. Everything being equal, it might not have even gone to a 7th game.

Yep, I agree they were good but they were also beatable. Real tough to beat a good team when they keep catching every break.

Well if not for the NHL Officiating we beat them. SO yea, I agree!

Exactly. But the most important factor in 2010 is that team lost 10 players. 5 ROLE players. 2-3 leaders.

And still I say if they win game 7 in Vancouver, after coming back from down 0-3, they contend for the Cup. Don't ever question the core of this teams determination. The mistake was going down 0-3.

The mistake was Campoli...never forget.

Yes, in 2010 losing Ladd was very detrimental, just as losing Bolland last year was IMO. Very good point. Even then IMO both teams could have won a Cup and just fell short. Last year one really terrible off sides call followed by one lucky as bounce, both in game #7.

Last year the hawks were simply the best team in the playoffs. If we would have beaten LA we would have destroyed New York. The problem was we were a 40 minute team.

Again the problem is when the Hawks weren't too terribly good in front of Crawford, Crawford wasn't too terribly good either. He's not a goalie that can consistently carry a team that isn't playing well. That's not a knock on him, there's hardly any goalie in the league that can really do that. But those are the goalies that you give those long term, big money deals to (and even those usually don't work out for that team). So I'd rather spend that money more on the team in front of the goalie, better spend to keep a team that can play that heavy puck possession game together/intact rather than relying on the goalie to bail them out.

If they were to somehow trade Crawford this season, which will never happen but just for the sake of argument, they wouldn't really have to worry about a new potentially expensive goalie contract until, at the soonest, two years from now, no matter if it's Raanta or Darling that's taken over the reigns. Raanta is signed for another year at a sub million dollar contract and Darling is a RFA after this year. There's no way he's going from league minimum to 6 million a year next season being a RFA, pretty much no matter what happens it won't work out to that kind of money. That gives you at least a few more years of substantially more cap room to keep some players that you would've otherwise lost and continue being the same kind of team they are right now, not to mention the salary cap also hopefully rising in those years as well.

If by purple you mean posting sarcastic or trolly points? It's definitely not established as green here

Holy shitballs I'm getting old as that color hurts my eyes. I think I'll just use both.

When was McNeil called up (and played)?

He's the only one on that list I made, but I would assume with how well he is doing that if a center goes down he's up next.

When you said, "they've all been given call ups and stepped in on certain games and done fine" I knew Dandault and Clendening had, but couldn't remember Mcneil doing that, so was wondering if the Amnesia was kicking in ...again. ;)

I mean....if you can go with a Raanta/Darling combo and get great play....Darling is a stopper as he learns to use that body. The question is (though the cap shouldn't be as bad as originally feared) does trading Crawford (if this is even possible, but somebody will need a goalie) allow us to keep Sharp/Bickell/Tuevo long term.

Thats where if you can replace Crawford with minimal damage, but you retain a dynastic top 9 in front, and are able to develop your young defenders.....

My problem with it is Crawford looked sensational at times this year, particularly when he was fresh at the beginning and the Hawks were playing like shit. He may have become that goalie that can win games for you when you suck.

Congrats to Raanta on winning without Keith yesterday. Sweet baby titties. And thats where it becomes so tough, we have money issues and 3 goalies that can play, 1 of them is on a big contract.

I trust whatever they decide to do. They know the nuances and weakness better than us. Its highly probably Raanta and Darling have a slight advantage in play because teams aren't 100% sure what their big weaknesses are yet. As statistical holes develop they will have to adjust as their careers progress.

****...I kinda still wish we had Niemi, I think we would have won last year. Crawford got caught up in playing Quick instead of playing hockey.

I'm not sold on Darling. I think he's just in the right spot at the right time and don't think if the going gets tough he could handle it.

Yep... this. When the adrenaline stops wearing off and teams can scout him we'll see what happens. Has he played the same team twice yet?
