the cubs get more of the casual fan than the sox, also the tourists. if he is talking about pure die hard one way, it is pretty close. just because the cubs sell out their games, it doesnt mean all those fans are there to watch baseball, as we all know wrigley and the area is one big party scene

Funny you should bring this up, as the Sox have never made the playoffs back to back years. I
To what Addison said, I agree, who cares? Sox fans, that's who. They take the Cubs-Sox rivalry sooooo seriously. It's crazy.

the sox went to the playoffs in 08 just like the cubs, the cubs also went in 2007. so yes the cubs went back to back, but with only one playoff birth the sox managed to win atleast 1 game, something that the cubs couldnt do in 07 and 08 combined.

Does it matter? No. The Sox didn't win the WS.

Not at all. I don't live in Chicago either, but the Cubs and their fans(speaking of the majority) don't really care about rivalry. We'd rather get swept by the Sox and win the WS, whereas they just want to say that they beat us. I think they'd too rather win the WS, but not to say they won, to say they are better than the Cubs.

White Sox fans base the success of their entire season on whether or not they beat the Cubs. I have several friends that after watching the Sox self-destruct last year said to me, "at least we beat you guys."

To which I responded something along the lines of, "Yeah, well enjoy watching the post season from the exact same place the Sox are. The couch."

I'm not even saying that the Sox will or won't be good this year, or that the Cubs will or won't be this year. Regardless of what happens, all that matters to the South Siders is whether they finished above .500 against the Cubs for the year.

this is what i think

Stop feeding the troll on this one....No one has ever heard of this guy until he started saying this.

The Sox are the biggest thing in town yet all he wants to do is talk about the Cubs.

Cowley isn't even the Sox beat writer anymore. :shrug

And there are a lot of Sox fans who would state that they disliked him when he was the beat writer. I thought you were one as well.

Weren't the Sox supposed to make the play offs last year?

No, they weren't. There were a lot of Sox fans who thought that the Sox were going to waste a decent rotation with an anemic offense if you asked them before the '10 season began. As it turned out, it wasn't only the offense that let the team down in '10, but also the pitching. The 16-2 run you referenced was mostly against the NL, right? What does that prove when you destroy teams that make-up something like 10% of your entire schedule?

No, you're wrong about your assessment of this as well. That's not a fan basing the success of a season based on a cross-town rival, that's a fan taking solace in a disappointing season. The buddy who said that felt dismissed and found a moral victory in a losing season. It's stupid.

This forum might be good for you to step out and realize there are some more realistic Sox fans rather than the one or two you have lunch with at the school cafeteria.

Fair enough. I didn't really look at who they were playing, just the fact that there were 16 tallies in the W column. I figured a win is a win, regardless of the opponent.

How is "basing the success of a season based on a cross-town rival" any different than "[finding] a moral victory in a losing season"? They look pretty much the same to me, just in that whether or not the Sox made the playoffs, at least they have the "we beat the Cubs" to fall back on.

Or am I still misunderstanding you?

I care about the Cubs Sox series. I usually have bets with Sox fans and don't lie people. It's fun. Its completely sensationalized but its fun and you know it.

I wish the Sox were put in the normal inter league rotation with AL Central teams. Imagine how nuts it'd be if they played every four years.

sure it is fun for the city and for the fans. but again, i dont worry if we lose games to the cubs, the only time i would worry is if it was a crosstown WS
