Alan Nero addressed the tampering talk indirectly in his WSCR interview on Saturday stating that the Tampa Bay brass was "quite angry" and that he and Maddon were prepared for whatever came next. A lot of conflicting reports about the opt out clause though. Nero said he contacted the Rays and then reminded Maddon. Other reports have Andrew Friedman telling Maddon about it last Monday. Personally I don't believe Maddon would have opted out without having a good idea where he was going so if Nero floated a dollar figure at Theo and asked if there was interest prior to Friday morning I wouldn't be surprised. I also wouldn't be surprised if thus thing gets done two days after the WS. It's clear that Bud Selig told everyone to cool it after the feeding frenzy of Friday and Saturday but I'm sure calls and/or negotiations continue.

Typical cubs board post.... Topic about the cubs signing joe maddon turns into a debate about a former white sox manager...

I honestly couldn't care less about Ozzie so long as he wasn't managing because at the end of the day if he's the bench coach or 3rd base coach or whatever, what impact do those positions ever have? Can anyone even name the cardinals staff outside of their manager?

As for on topic, supposedly there's talk about teams going after the cubs for tampering if they sign Maddon which I don't get at all. From everything I read, Maddon didn't even know he had an out clause until tampa told him after AF left. Perhaps you could argue that after he found that out he talked to some clubs to gauge interest but good luck actually proving that. It's sounding like a pretty solid lock that Maddon is coming to the cubs from the stuff I've read. Would definitely give them a bump for the casual fan I'd imagine especially if he comes with some premium FA's.

Two comments.

1. It's far from a lock
2. The casual fan does not care about a manager.

It does sound like a lock but so did Girardi last year so I agree with you but I think there is a difference. Girardi purposely played the Cubs for leverage but then, oddly, accepted less money to stay in NY. Maddon isn't negotiating money, I think his price is firm, but instead is looking for fit. The Cubs are clearly the best fit for his skills.

Can't name them all but Jose Oquendo is the 3B coach and John Mabry is the hitting coach.

How did Girardi sound like a lock? The smell of roses was being passed back and forth but it was far from a lock.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I also read this from Haugh over the weekend. Girardi did no such thing. The Cubs were not able to talk with Joe before he re-signed with the Yanks.

Best fit? How so? Renteria was hired as the best fit to work with the kids. They are still just that. You want to say Maddon is better with kids, I have no leg to stand on. But Renteria did exactly what was asked and should not be let go for doing so.

If Joe Maddon is so coveted because he's this genius, his first decision of bringing Ozzie with him where ever he goes shouldn't be an issue.

When Theo said the goal next year is the play offs. Rick is not that guy.

You won't get any argument from me. I was the only one on CCS that said Renteria is not the guy. That said, everyone on this board knows Theo lied about that with everyone on this board saying Bryant won't be up with the club from day #1.

Heard a rumor that Theo called Maddon on a burner phone.

I must have missed the post where someone said there was a poll.
You did say you were the only one here who said RR wasn't the guy. How is that possibly determined without quantifiable data?

Im pretty confident that the majority believed Renteria was just a bridge gap coach until the Cubs were ready to compete. It seems the time line got pushed up and if Theo and them thinks its time to make the push then Maddon will be our coach. I like Renteria, but his in game managing is not the greatest. I also read its not necessarily that if Maddon was hired that Renteria would be let go. Im not sure how that would work, but he would be getting paid pretty well for a bench coach if he stayed. I always thought Maddon was the target of this front office since they took over. I always thought they were trying to just have stop gap coaches. I believe thats why they chose two guys that were supposed to develop over win.

I missed what Maddon won. He has done a great job devloping though and I would want him on the South Side just in case there are those Flubbers that want to say I am trolling.

Have you ever heard of a manager doing their job and then being retained as a coach?

Nope. But it wouldn't surprise me if this were the first. If it did happen, I think they would save themselves the scrutiny and keep him on in some capacity.

Unfortunately, this is to managers like it is to players. A business.

Renteria did an overall acceptable job this year with what he had, and they would probably create a position for him rather than severing ties completely.

If they could find a position for Manny, they could find one for Renteria if needed.

It could be the first.

I think if it were it would get even more scrutiny.
They are not creating a lesser position for him to be moved to. That's a demotion.

And the Manny example fails as an analogy as he was never the Cubs to begin with.

I dont know, I think he did a pretty great job considering it was all prospects or nothing. Friedman and him would have won a Series if they had a Cubs budget.
