While I had them penciled in at 9.5, the extra two mildo a year for both players can be easily counterweighed - of course, whoever makes the tribute videos might be pretty busy the next couple years.

But here's where it's going to be a lot more interesting...they're going to have to start backfilling the roster with younger, cheaper players playing for a coach who has been less than enthusiastic about using those players.

So was Q not enthusiastic enough when playing Leddy, Saad, Shaw, Kruger - all with minimum or zero AHL time? Nordstrom made the team to start the year, Toews and Kane were both rather young - although had 1 year NHL experience

Maybe the "younger" players - specifically Morin, Pirri, Hayes - need to show a better all around game, better practice/off ice habits - to actually earn the right to play, instead of handing them the spot on a team that has high standards/expectations of professionalism

Best thing to happen to all four of those players was the lockout. Getting a half season extra in the AHL helped them a lot. But even with that, the only reason Saad got his shot was an injury to Carcillo. Until that point, Q preferred Gorilla Salad to Saad. So he Homered himself into some of these guys getting playing time.

Yep. Same thing the Flyers/Pronger, Bruins/Savard and Lighting/Ohlund.

Right but they have actual injuries that have legitimately kept them out of the game. I would think that there's some way the NHL can dispute something like that if it's fishy enough.

We're talking about multiple years here. On a player/contract that was specifically targeted with the cap recapture penalty.

And a legitimate, serious eye injury and concussion symptoms where he cannot play hockey at any level, and where he struggles just to have a normal day to day life away from the game just being at home.

Eye injury/back injury... A lot of NHL players have issues that could be used as a reason to not grind through a full season playing for a small percentage of what they had been making.

Yeah but multiple seasons? Again, that's probably what it'll end up being. I'm just saying you can't compare guys like Hossa coming back and playing at a high level the offseasons after both of his more serious injuries, and guys like Pronger and Savard who have been struggling for years now since theirs. I'm not saying it can't be done, or that it won't go down that way, it's just I'd think the NHL would have a way, like a third party doctor or something, to go in and make sure it's for real.

But on the other hand, I can imagine that they wouldn't do something like that. Because it's the NHL.

You can't even get the NHL to hire third party doctors to run concussion protocols. That's why Hjalmarsson's symptoms "returned" the second the Hawks were eliminated.

.... "Why can't Hossa just finish out his deal?

If anyone can play into their 40's, it's probably a player like Hossa.

2015-16 will obviously have it's bumps and bruises, but I'm sure within those 8 years, we'll still see a few more powerhouse teams along the way.

That said, the core is going to have some changes. Toews, Kane, Keith, and Crawford right now seem to be the most important cogs in Bowman's eyes. Guys who were once considered part of the core, like Seabrook, Sharp, and Hossa, may not be in the mix anymore going forward with Saad, Shaw, and other promising prospects with massive potential.

I'd like to think Versteeg and maybe Bickell, would be the first contracts to get shaved off the cap (as far as deals that extend past this upcoming season)... But I seriously question the future of Sharp now. It sucks, but lets face it, Toews and Kane are more important -- and so is Saad's extension if he keeps progressing.

The defense could really be in trouble if there's a massive overturn over the next two years, potentially 4 spots out of the top 6 could be gone (Seabrook, Oduya, Rozsival, Leddy) if Bowman isn't careful.

I like Dahlbeck, Johns, and Clendening, but I don't want to see all three of them thrown into an NHL line-up because of a cap crunch.

We'll see what happens. The first year or two of this 8 year era could be bumpy, but the last 6 years of it could be amazing."

Hossa could play out his contract, that's a possibility. But I think that no matter what, the Hawks can't afford to take the chance and trade him and then have him retire with another team before his contract is up. Then they're fucked big time. I think if that happens, the cap penalty could be even more than had he retired with Chicago early. They pretty much have to keep him within their control.
