The current cap situation shouldn't have any bearing on if they can sign or not. But it's possible there is a "tagging" issue, but not sure about how all that works.

Apparently he is to Washington because that's what they signed him for

And that makes it a smart deal? So whatever any team signs a player for, whatever the terms, it's a good deal because they thought it was worth it? No lol. There are simply quite a few dumb NHL GMs.

It makes a smart deal because they need defensive defenceman on their team. He was the best available. He's a top 2-3 defenceman on any team. That's worth 5-5.5 mil. They took him from a rival - weakening them. He is very physical, cup winning, Olympian, leader for a team that needs leadership. All worth 5.5 million dollars to good teams that want to win that have a need for it.

All very good reasons to sign him

GMs are the dumb ones...when they've forgotten more about building a team than you ever knew. But I'm sure you're much wiser than them

He blocks nearly as many shots as Hjarllmarsson, and will have 200 more hits than he will.

People all claim hjarllmarsson is underpaid at 4.5 mil and he's just as good defensively and 5x more physical

So yes, 5.5mil is not a bad UFA contract to lure a player from a rival team

Not buying that at all. Hammer (along with Oduya) led the league with how much time they spent going up against tougher opposition. When you can say that about Brooks Orpik, yeah maybe then you can say he would be worth a bigger deal than what Hammer got. Maybe. Maybe if he wasn't also turning 34 this year and has had numerous injuries and is slowing down and on the decline, maybe then you could say it was worth that kind of contract. But you can't say any of that. This is bad no matter which way you look at it. He's going to be bought out a year or two down the road. This is just a bad, desperate signing, that's all it is.

Playing against tougher competition?? He plays top 4 minutes. He played top 4 in the olympics as well. Was that not too competition?? He played 21:11 min per game - 5 seconds less a game than hjarllmarsson. He had 200 more hits than hjarllmarsson. I guess he is losing a step or two Lmao and this past year, he's blocked more shots than he's ever had in his career

And yes...rather injury prone. And how many games has toews missed the last 4 years?
