Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, during a lengthy interview Wednesday on WGWG-FM 87.7, responded to a variety of questions ranging from the Cubs’ patient, long-term vision to create a sustainable level of success on the playing field, to the ongoing business saga with the Wrigleyville rooftop owners and the awkward relationship between the Cubs and former All-Star slugger Sammy Sosa.
“We want to win as much as anybody wants to win," Ricketts said. "But you have to do it in a way that makes you a consistent winner. There are no shortcuts. You can't gamble with your future to have some short-term feel-good trade or signing. You've got to build your foundation."My job is to do everything I can to get a championship to Chicago. If you want to win 83 games for 10 years in a row ...there's a way to go about that.
And I imagine (general manager) Jed (Hoyer) and (club president) Theo (Epstein) could swing that today.
Ricketts said he does not get directly involved in player personnel decisions involving the organization's top young prospects, deferring to the wisdom of Epstein and Hoyer.
“It is 100 percent their decisions. I support them whenever I can,” Ricketts said. “You don’t second-guess those guys. You pay them for a reason.”
Regarding the ongoing acrimonious negotiations with the rooftop owners, Ricketts said he is hopeful but he did not want to put a timetable on getting a deal done.
“We continue to keep talking," he said. "We're looking for something that works for everybody. Our goal is to find something that gets us to move forward with the least amount of incremental drama. For right now we’re just trying to work it out."
Asked how his personal emotional attachment to Wrigley Field might impede any hard-ball negotiations, Ricketts replied, "We don’t want to treat Wrigley just like any other park.
We want to be respectful to our fans that Wrigley means more to our fans. ... We’re moving forward.”
