I obviously don’t feel like working this morning, so I created a list of dramas that I think are worth watching. I left out things like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Lost, Sopranos and the Wire, since everyone knows about those.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
It’s mediocre until the last seven episodes of season 1, and those are really good. It helps if you’ve watched/paid attention to the Marvel movies. Otherwise, it’s kinda like NCIS with an occasional superhero.
The Americans
The first season was good, but I thought the second season put it into Emmy territory. The Cold War/80’s setting and the premise (American spies posing as an American family while also becoming more and more like an actual American family) are really good.
Boardwalk Empire
I like every season, but you have to be patient. There’s usually a lot of storylines that don’t pay off until the final couple of episodes of each season, but the payoff is always worth it.
Deadwood
Dialog is better than just about any show I can think of. I’d put it in my top-5 dramas, ever. It should have lasted another season.
Fargo
This will re-boot with a new cast if it comes back, but the first season was really good. Billy Bob Thornton is a really good bad guy.
Friday Night Lights
All five seasons are good, with season 2 being the weakest of the bunch due to the writer’s strike. There’s also a murder that happens in season 2 that you can ignore because the show forgets that it ever happens. That’s the only really low point I can think of.
Justified
The first three seasons were good (season two is an all-time great). Season 4 dropped off a little and Season 5 was a mess. Still worth watching, though.
Masters of Sex
About the sex research done by Masters and Johnson in the late 1950’s. First season was great. The current season seems to be going nowhere.
Shameless
It’s not as funny as it once was, but the show gets better every season. Emmy Rossum should be racking up awards for this show.
Terriers
It only lasted one season, but it’s a really good show about an alcoholic, unlicensed private detective. It should’ve lasted a lot longer. The season finale serves as a decent series finale, though.
Treme
Created by David Simon who was the showrunner on The Wire. This is one of my favorite shows, ever. It’s about post-Katrina New Orleans. It can be incredibly slow and you have long stretches in which nothing happens, but it’s always good. The acting is amazing throughout.
True Detective
Everyone’s already heard about how great it is, but I thought I’d include it, anyway.
Mini-series
The Corner and Generation Kill are both good, and they were both created by David Simon from The Wire. I also really liked Top of the Lake, which starred Elisabeth Moss from Mad Men.
This probably looks like I watch a lot of TV, but I watch very few sitcoms and virtually no reality shows. It’s usually around 3-4 hours a week. Although, I see a lot of reality shows while I’m at the bar. People seem to really like to drink while watching other people do weird jobs (fishing, moonshining, alligator hunting). It’s weird.
