Some of my favorite shows the past few years that I don't think have been mentioned yet.
1. Continuum - In the future, the government is controlled by corporations and a terrorist group called Liberate is at war with the government. They go back in time 70 years to try and prevent their future from happening and are followed by a government protector. It's a Canadian show and the premise and execution is pretty good.
2. Person of Interest - This is on CBS so I assume you have watched it but if not it's a pretty good show. The premise is a machine provides the social security number for a person that can either be a victim or perpetrator of a violent crime and the protagonists of the show try and figure out which they are and to prevent the violent crime. Seems like a basic enough premise but the show is a great blend of cop procedural, sci-fi, and spy show all in one.
3. The Blacklist - Another show on mainstream TV (NBC) about a former CIA agent turned traitor who is one of the FBI's most wanted suddenly turning himself in to the Feds. In exchange for not being sent to jail, he offers up details on criminals that are so shady and shadowy that the FBI doesn't know they exist hence the title Blacklist.
4. Almost Human - You want the British version and not the American version (although that one is decent). The premise is a vampire, werewolf, and ghost end up living in a flat together. It sounds stupid but the drama that unfolds is funny, dark, and tragic all at the same time.
5. Misfits - Another British show about a group of British delinquents forced to do community service at a local rec center who gain super powers after a freak storm. Like Almost Human, it's funny, dark, and tragic all at the same time.
6. Perception - A TNT show about a paranoid schizophrenic who is a professor and one of the foremost authorities on the human mind who consults for one of his former students who is an FBI agent. In the course of assisting them he ends up conversing with his other personalities in order to help solve cases and is never quite sure what is real and what isn't.
7. Elementary - Sherlock Holmes living in modern day New York. Johny Lee Miller's Sherlock is a lot more rugged than the British Show's version but this take on Holmes is still pretty interesting especially with Lucy Liu playing Watson. Overall I like the British one better but the benefit of this version is you get 23 episodes a season and while the British show is more faithful to the books, this version takes some liberties with the source material that when it works, it works really well.
8. Fall Skies - Not for everyone but a TNT show about the aftermath of an Alien Invasion. Probably one of the more mature and well executed versions of this kind of story I have seen in the past decade or so.
9. Copper - A BBC America show about a NY Copper in the 1860s right around the time of the Civil War. It's a pretty good period drama with aspects of a cop procedural.
10. Torchwood - You mentioned watching Dr. Who and this was the spin-off from that show that follows the exploits of Captain Jack Harkness. It's a bit more mature and darker than Dr. Who and some of the later seasons are a miss but the first season or two was pretty good.
