Lamarr Houston as a 4-3 DE?

Could work, but he's not an explosive edge rusher by any means. He's a guy that can play the run well and eventually outduel a single blocker, but not the type of rusher the other team has to account for on any given down.

The bolded part is a double edged sword.
If they want to use him on running and passing downs, there is a good possibility his sacks and QB hits could fall drastically as a result of wearing down.

I have seen people citing that number as a positive, and thinking his numbers would be better if he played full time.
I think it is equally possible that it could expose him as a lesser player.

He played full time in Tampa Bay in 2012 and had 9 sacks, 14 hits and 48 hurries in 985 total snaps with 569 pass rush snaps. His PRP was 9.8%. This year in Seattle he had 9, 17, 39 in 615 snaps with 379 pass rush snaps. His PRP was 13.5%.

So certainly more production per snap as just a pass rush specialist but his 2012 numbers were still good and it may be the improvement is because he is entering his prime years.

I think this was a lot of teams strategy going into free agency. In the 3 day allowed tampering world get the best deal, bring it back to us and we'll beat/match it.

Look how many players are staying with their current teams for slightly bigger deals than they probably would have gotten if they just resigned.

Not really any good young DE's out there now. Just Michael Johnson. Jared Allen it is.

If you never got excited in the first place then you probably aren't too upset.

Go get some good value FAs that fill some gaps and move on. If you are building your dynasty through free agency then you only have 1-2 seasons until the repo man comes collecting.

I was believing the hype about emery fixing the D in one season. Now I'm hearing 'bad draft for pass rushers, DE FA market is turning against us...'

bummed

This tweet from a couple hours ago makes it seem that the Bears anticipated this and moved on.

That doesn't change the fact that the Raiders have him playing out of position. He's a prototypical 4-3 UT, and very likely a Pro Bowler if he ever gets a chance. Why pay him FA money to play 2/3rds of his snaps at LE instead of the position he's most suited to?

He plays really well as a 4-3 end. He's probably even better against the run than he is as a pass rusher, so you put him at LDE to stop the run on early downs and move inside to play as a one-gap DT on passing downs. They're in the nickel over half the time (not 1/3), anyway.
