What do you prefer/drive?

I learned how to drive on a manual as a teenager, and hated every minute of it. The monotonous shifting and whatnot.
Many years and cars later I decided to try the manual trans, again.
I sort of gained a new found appreciation for the whole transmission thing.
I'm just more keen to how it works/behaves under different situations now, and like the fact that I'm more in control of the car.

Will I buy another manual after this car? Probably not, but I'm glad I got to re-experience it.

I went to Smokey Mountains last summer and took the wife's car(automatic). The hotel was up on a mountain(steep hills), I would've died if I had taken the manual.

The configuration matters for sure. I don't like driving vans with a manual, but have no problem doing it. My current daily driver is a 5speed stick, previous was a 6speed, and of the 11 vehicles before I owned and drove, only three were automatic. So while I do have my preference, I also don't think automatic is instantly worse or less enjoyable. I also try to avoid things like electronic power steering, because I'm one of those people that needs to feel connected to the road. Although I admit, some cars are there with full range response time, but some of those cars also auto-correct inputs with no way of disabling the so-called "feature".

For the purpose of this conversation, I hope we don't get someone who tries to claim their paddle shifter or clutchless automatic that allows manual shifts is the same as a manual transmission. A manual, and I hope you're with me on this, means there is a mandatory clutch pedal that if went ignored means you're grinding through gears to make shifts(queue Family Guy meme).

I have owned 7 manual transmission cars in my life. Makes you feel alive and engaged with the road. You havent lived until you are stopped on an uphill road with ice on the ground and you have to coordinate the shift, gas and clutch

Both of my vehicles are manual. One is 6spd other is 5spd. I'm glad I learned in my teenage years it helped out when I went to Italy a few times in '16. 95% of the rental cars were manual.

The coolest maunaul transmission was in the Audi R8. Gated, long throw and it would clank when the level completed the shift. Nothing else like it

My daily is a Automatic. It is a pickup so I prefer it that way, but when in the Jeep I definitely prefer the manual shifting.

This is how it has to be- Driving in rush hour traffic with a manual is torture.
Ripping around on the weekend it is the only way to go.

Not to derail, but some of these new "features" they have on cars where you cannot disable them, makes me wary of getting anything new.

The stuff where it tries to autocorrect you in the lane or auto-brakes for you.

My Uncle has a car that does this stuff and it has been driving him nuts.

If you are an idiot and want the car autocorrecting your driving, fine... but I would rather not.

I figured by your ID. It'd be terrible to own an automatic supra.

I rented a Suburban with all them auto correcting features.
The lane assist vibrating seats seemed cool for the time of the rental, but don't think i'd want it forever.

I prefer automatic. Manual feels like watching a VHS in a world of Blu Ray to me. Although I know others swear by it but just not for me.

I love all these features. I just want to tune them and FULLY disable them.

If I'm on a 12 hour road trip(which is an edge case for me and most drivers) I'd be perfectly happy having some of these features enabled when I feel like I'm hiting an energy wall or dozing off and simply need to get to the next off-ramp or rest-stop.

That seems to be the main concern.... you cannot tune nor disable them.

For a daily driver I prefer automatic, I just don't happen to have a daily that is an automatic. I can't imagine have a sports car without a clutch. There is a certain feeling of being in control. Also not having traction control adds to that. IMO so many sports cars have been tamed electronically. I totally understand that it makes them more marketable to the masses but it removes the driver too much for my liking.

Yeah I guess I was never into the whole in control thing. I will occasionally drive on the Western part of the Island around 110-120 and I feel plenty in control with my automatic and frankly wouldn't want to feel any more in control. So to each his/her own I suppose.
