I also like the fact that I have more control over gas usage.
As long as I'm not dragging the traffic I like to hypermile.

S8 sedan blows away any production vette

Nah, I would not be caught in either an Audi (chick car) or a corvette (micro-penis, other than the old classics which are pretty epic).

Man up and get a real ride.

BTW, you can't afford an S8 on your pension.

I'm sure omelet has reviews that support his audi love.

Depends on the intended use of the vehicle.

Daily driver- auto all the way
Sports car- manual if in a road course-y car. Auto if in a drag racer or big power sedan
Trucks or vans- auto
Dedicated 4x4- manual

Honorable mention to flappy paddle transmissions in a competitive road course car. If lap times are all that matters this is the gearbox to have

Those pro-Audi reviews were written by young impressionable ladies,

There are reviews that are also supportive of Yugos and Pacers, somewhere I imagine.

In many countries, such as Poland, the manual transmission is standard. Not to be sexist or anything, but I don’t know any women around here who drive stick shift. They all drive stick in Poland.

Would depend. Where I live, manual is great, a ton of twisty roads, little traffic. My son battles Charlotte traffic daily, no way I would own a daily manual.

My daily is a Automatic. It is a pickup so I prefer it that way, but when in the Jeep I definitely prefer the manual shifting.

My second car was a manual XJ, got me through most of high school and my first run at college. I'll eventually buy another one, probably my favorite vehicle I ever owned. The straight six was so easy to work on too, everything I ever needed to do to that Jeep I was able to figure out myself with a Chilton's and basic tools. Heh, I was driving in downtown Bellevue at 1 AM when I heard a bang come from the rear of my jeep, lost power to the wheels and hear something dragging on the ground. Pulled over, found my U Joint in two pieces (but somehow still clinging in the socket); grabbed some JB Weld out of the back, and glued that SOB back together. Got me through a couple days before I could actually replace the joint.

Loved that thing.

What do you prefer/drive?

I learned how to drive on a manual as a teenager, and hated every minute of it. The monotonous shifting and whatnot.
Many years and cars later I decided to try the manual trans, again.
I sort of gained a new found appreciation for the whole transmission thing.
I'm just more keen to how it works/behaves under different situations now, and like the fact that I'm more in control of the car.

Will I buy another manual after this car? Probably not, but I'm glad I got to re-experience it.

I went to Smokey Mountains last summer and took the wife's car(automatic). The hotel was up on a mountain(steep hills), I would've died if I had taken the manual.

Manual transmission is preferred in sport/race cars and work trucks. Not so much for daily driving because or the obvious you drive in a lot of traffic and rough terrain you can wear yourself out as the clutch itself.

I don't give a shit about manuals anymore. Those days are long gone. Give me a twin clutch paddle shifted automatic any day.

I'd like to hear the Foreign Banana's opinion on this one . . .

My daily driver is auto. I spent 5 years building a classic bronco and put a 5 speed NV 3550 in it mated with a rebuilt 351W from a 94 ford Lightning. That thing is so much fun to drive and a total sleeper. In short, I think for daily driving auto, but for fun a manual.

Not to derail, but some of these new "features" they have on cars where you cannot disable them, makes me wary of getting anything new.

The stuff where it tries to autocorrect you in the lane or auto-brakes for you.

My Uncle has a car that does this stuff and it has been driving him nuts.

If you are an idiot and want the car autocorrecting your driving, fine... but I would rather not.
Had to turn the lane assist off in my car because when I needed to move over because of idiots, I had to fight the lane assist. Don't need to get hit by people not paying attention when merging because I have to fight the wheel to move out of the lane. That and it tried to merge me back into the lane when I was going around a stopped postal truck.

I felt like there was already a thread on this........I like having the option of both.............my car has an automatic transmission that can switch on the fly to paddle shifting manual with a sport transmission.........

Doesn't feel like a stick, but it shifts faster than one and gets better gas mileage.

I have driven both full time manual and auto.......paddle shifting rocks.

Really? I've had that manumatic /shiftronic or whatever you call it and it absolutely sucked.
Just not as fun or engaging.
Never had paddles tho.

I'd rather have an advanced automatic than a paddle shifter. At that point, just turn in your man card and start wearing skinny jeans.
