Automatic for me. My vet had the paddle shift on it also and I just couldn’t get into it. I’m too lazy and distracted of a driver to do manual

How am I supposed to text and drive when one hand needs to constantly be on a fucking shifter?

This might be a creative/effective solution to teens who text/drive.... ban them from automatic transmissions.

Supreme Court will rule this violates cruel/unusual punishment.

The configuration matters for sure. I don't like driving vans with a manual, but have no problem doing it. My current daily driver is a 5speed stick, previous was a 6speed, and of the 11 vehicles before I owned and drove, only three were automatic. So while I do have my preference, I also don't think automatic is instantly worse or less enjoyable. I also try to avoid things like electronic power steering, because I'm one of those people that needs to feel connected to the road. Although I admit, some cars are there with full range response time, but some of those cars also auto-correct inputs with no way of disabling the so-called "feature".

For the purpose of this conversation, I hope we don't get someone who tries to claim their paddle shifter or clutchless automatic that allows manual shifts is the same as a manual transmission. A manual, and I hope you're with me on this, means there is a mandatory clutch pedal that if went ignored means you're grinding through gears to make shifts(queue Family Guy meme).
We can split a ton of hairs here, but in general I get where you're coming from. Most paddle-shifters and tiptronics are slushboxes with manual control. Then you also have the Dual-clutch transmissions which are a whole other can of worms.

I drive an Slushbox, but prefer a manual. I wasn't going to give up about 30hp just for a stickshift when I bought my G6. Even with the Slushbox drivetrain losses I still come out ahead in the power dept.

Only drove on the floor stickshifts...the "Three on the tree" would be a complete mindfuck.

Currently need to teach the wife how to use the parking brake on a hill instead of the pedal.

The coolest maunaul transmission was in the Audi R8. Gated, long throw and it would clank when the level completed the shift. Nothing else like it

Not to derail, but some of these new "features" they have on cars where you cannot disable them, makes me wary of getting anything new.

The stuff where it tries to autocorrect you in the lane or auto-brakes for you.

My Uncle has a car that does this stuff and it has been driving him nuts.

If you are an idiot and want the car autocorrecting your driving, fine... but I would rather not.
That would turn me off as well and I wouldn't want any part of it ...but for my 16 year old daughter, I want all the autocorrecting you got.

The real fun with manuals comes when you have to drive them in one of those fucking backward right-hand-drive countries; throwing far away, even with the wrong hand, seems like the proper way to get into 5th gear, not 1st... The pedals still being in the same configuration still feels kind of natural, but it's just strange having shorter gears further away from you than the talls.

used both.. prefer both.. if im being lazy an auto is fine by me.. if i wanna get everything out of a vehicle.. a stick.... coming to aus.. my wifes car at the time was a manual and i had to learn to shift with me left hand.. was awkward at first. even as a southpaw..

afta the military thang.. my first thing was finding a new skill fer me resume that didnt involve combat training.. .. learned to drive a 12 speed n got me cdl class a.. double clutchin n all.. now i would prefer an auto if i were a truck driver.. dem pros never had to double clutch though.. just us newbs.. truck driving career was short.. brakes semi went out on a mountain.. 10% grade.. fer 5 miles of ****.. imma bout to die..

Agreed, but want real fun with a manual? Try a synchroless transmission.

I liked using a manual in Oz. It kept my left hand on the shifter so I didnt turn on my wipers when I meant to turn on the blinker... :shifty:

Hmm. The cars I've always used were the same shift pattern as normal.

I could never wrap my head around looking to the left for the rear view.

I like both... although hard to beat new autos performance wise.
That and the ease when not driving aggressively.
