Now that I finally have some free time, I saw some flicks.

I saw Gravity over the weekend.

Special effects are some of the best I have ever seen. Story is pretty decent too.

8/10

Oldboy (original)

Great film, messed up plot, tremendous execution of seriously taboo subject matter

8/10

King of New York

I never saw this Christopher Walken classic, but it's worth the time.

6.5/10

Yea, I liked Gravity and I think it is worth seeing in the theater. The only thing I did not like about it was that there was too much foreshadowing and it was too obvious. Kind of left out being surprised at anything with the story and predicting too much too early.

Watched an Indy film called Paradox Alice. Special Effects are sub par, the premise was interesting though, the earth is destroyed and the last 3 humans in existence are on a space ship, and the movie is pretty intriguing until the end. The end sucked.

Basically the last three humans are all males, until one mutates into a female.

Oldboy to this day is still a favorite of mine. I'm not sure why, and I feel dirty saying it, but I love that fucking movie.

I still haven't seen it. It's been in my queue on Netflix for probably a year. Maybe I'll get around to it soon.

I found out about it when Paul posted about watching the original Oldboy. I decided to look on imdb because I didn't realize there was another version.

Either did I... I was looking at something completely different (I saw that they are looking to do Full House again with the same cast and in that article I saw the Olson sister was a actress too, Elizabeth Olson, and I clicked her IMDB to see what she had been in and booooom, she's in Oldboy) and it crept up. I can't tell if it looks good or not. They seem to have the same feel but I can't tell how much they changed the story. I liked the martial arts in the first one and this one seems to try to do that but I don't know if Brolin can pull it off. And of course Sam Jackson is in it, they aren't allowed to make a movie without him. (look at his IMDB, he's in 10 unreleased movies right now that are coming out.

I think it's going to be a movie weekend. Cold front and rain is going to end up cancelling my plans this weekend. Any suggestions?

BOYCOTT THE REMAKE!!!

The original Oldboy (all three of the "revenge" series) is amazing. It doesnt need to be remade. DEMAND film makers and producers who roll in cash to develop original stories.

Also watch (Sympathy for) Lady Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance are top 10 flicks for me.

Agreed with this, Lady Vengeance is also excellent, Can't remember if I saw the other one but I thought I made it a point to can't remember. I saw Oldboy a long time ago because I read an article about it in wired or something. Made quite the lasting impression. It was one of the few movies with subtitles I had watch because generally I didn't like them but it ended up helping me relax my standards on them because it was so good.

Agree, but this is where we live. The culture of mediocrity.

The good ole U S of I'm not reading that subtitle garbage of A.

Hollyweird isn't going to abide by requests for original content. Most of those films are very low budget independent. If someone in Hollyweird does like an idea or script that's original, they'll option it or buy it so it can be shelved or it will be ruined by the "actors" they poorly choose to star in the roles.

There needs to be another industry crash of the early 1960s. That may have been the last good era of American cinema.

The good writing has migrated to television (in small numbers), and even those writers have had to fight tooth and nail from executives to keep their grubby hands off (Breaking Bad, Battlestar, Orange is the New Black, etc.).

I'm seeing less and less of smaller to low budget films making it into a market to be screened, yet the shift of on-demand is growing and giving more opportunities to filmmakers with original concepts.
