Dont get me wrong, there have been remakes that I thought were great or needed to be done.

Casino Royale anyone?

Oldboy is not one of them. There is no way that the Spike Lee Joint will improve upon the original... it can only hurt it.

The good writing has migrated to television (in small numbers), and even those writers have had to fight tooth and nail from executives to keep their grubby hands off (Breaking Bad, Battlestar, Orange is the New Black, etc.).

I'm seeing less and less of smaller to low budget films making it into a market to be screened, yet the shift of on-demand is growing and giving more opportunities to filmmakers with original concepts.

OT a bit, but how good is Orange is the New Black, I keep passing it over but feel like I really should watch it.

I enjoyed it. Certainly enough to finish the season (which can be rare for me) and will watch the second season.

Aight... I've got netflix on my vita now too. I'll throw it up and maybe with so much access to netflix now I'll finally get it done. I find myself watching netflix less and less.

The trailer for the new Oldboy. I finally saw the original last week. I'm not impressed with this trailer.

Meaning you didn't think it did the movie justice, or you weren't impressed with the movie in general?

I am in the same boat. The original does not need a remake.

Although I will say that I will watch ANY director re-create the "hammer" scene, since that scene is my favorite.

The remake. I enjoyed the original. It was definitely fucked up. There were a few scenes that were a little ridiculous, but overall it I like it. I had a pretty good idea what the plot twist at the end would be but figured it couldn't be that easy to figure out and that the girl had to know, but I was wrong.

In all honesty I don't mind remakes. Some are done exceptionally well and it's nice seeing another directors perspective. After all, pretty much every story out there has been told before. It's just a matter of how it's told. Though, most Hollywood remakes are just done to cash in so they lack any creativity.

For the most part, I dont either. There have been some remakes that I liked better than the originals. Like... True Grit for example because, I hate John Wayne. Yeah, I said it, he is a shit actor that makes Kevin Costner look like a master thespian.

Because Oldboy is a favorite of mine, it just...sparked that nerve cluster that cares about pointless events in pop culture... :)

Some remakes I enjoyed (a lot of them I haven't seen the original so I can't comment if the original was better)

Oceans 11

Manchurian Candidate

True Grit

Scent of Woman

3:10 to Yuma

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (I hated the original Swedish version)

The Departed

Insomnia

The Italian Job (Not the greatest film, but it was entertaining)

Little Shop of Horrors

Oceans 11 -- Agreed.

Manchurian Candidate -- indifferent

True Grit -- agreed with vigor

Scent of Woman -- indifferent

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (I hated the original Swedish version) -- STRONGLY disagree, I hated the American version.

The Departed -- I would have enjoyed much more if Scorsese would have given ANY credit to Infernal Affairs, instead of selling as his own.

Insomnia -- Agreed, but I would watch any movie Nolan worked on.

The Italian Job (Not the greatest film, but it was entertaining) -- HA I havent seen either of them

the Fly

13 Assassins (again with those damn samurai flicks)

13 Assassins has been on my radar of films I need to watch very soon.

Going to see Dallas Buyers Club tonight. First time I've been to the theater in awhile and it's a nice local Art theater. Looking forward to it.

Bold One: Dont be afraid it is Miike. It is his masterpiece. Even Ebert (who detests fight scenes) sung its praises:

"I often find fight scenes in movies boring, because they substitute movement for drama. But in "13 Assassins," characters are involved who we know and understand, and the general melee is broken down into structured vignettes. Hollywood action directors could study this film, especially in the way it focuses on story in the midst of violence."

Some amatuer tail-end Tokugawa Shogunate history makes the story better and Shinzaemon is an instant classic samurai character. It sits right next to Shogun (mini-series) and Lone Wolf and Cub(s) on the ole dvd shelf.

Interested in your opinion of Dallas Buyers Club. I think it is an interesting story.

I hate remakes that during the process of remaking it they change everything and switch charecter genre's or the sex of the charecter to give it alternate meaning and all that shit so that by the end of the day you are at a totally different movie and why even call it the original name... I didn't see it but I assume that's what total recall did, but they kept the 3-tits so it's ok in my book.

HA! Total Recall... I am torn there. I love the campy style of Verhoeven but the story was barely the original info. I like Dick's story better but in the remake, perhaps since I read as a much younger man, the new Total Recall plays out on screen more like a mid-life crisis than a sci-fi espionage story.
