Hangover 2 was terrible. It was Hangover part 1, but just a different location. I couldn't believe how much the script and sequence of events was similar to the first movie. Pure shit, don't waste your time.

I didn't love The Hangover and I thought it was grossly overhyped and over-rated HOWEVER I will watch anything with Zach Galifanafigousokasomaloukas in it and I always laugh at his performances. So I will waste my time just to see Zach Galifinalcholicaskolagous.

Apparently, it's really hard for a guy like him to get a table for one at Chuck E. Cheese.

Watched some flicks this weekend

Scott Pilgrim VS the World - Your teenager will love it. Mildly entertaining. Worth a look on Netflix/Cable.

A Serious Man - I'm a fan of the Coens and was mesmorized by this film. I think I kept expecting the main character to pop a gasket and go postal after all the fucked up shit that kept happening to him. If you aren't a fan of the Coens I'd stay away. For Coen brother fans it might be worth a look, particularly if you liked "Barton Fink" or "The Man Who Wasn't There".

Crossing Over - Caught the last 40 minutes of this on Showtime, and want to see the film in it's entirety now. It is apparently a movie about multiple illegal aliens and their experiences in "crossing over" the border, from illegal to green card holder, from green card holder to naturalized citizen. The individual stories are all inter-connected by the different employees within INS and homeland security. Worth a look.

Caught X-men: First Class this weekend and I must admit it was sooooo much better than the travesty of a movie that was X-men 3: The Last Stand. I was able to let my nerdiness overcome the re-imagining of decades old character's back stories and the weak development of every character except Charles Xavier (Professor X) and Erik Lensherr (Magneto). It was extremely entertaining and Michael Fassbender as Magento and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique were spot on choices for their portrayals. Even James McAvoy gave the overly paternal visage of Professor X some youthful zeal. While I'm a fan of January Jones... she was totally miscast as Emma Frost. What, in the comics, is a very powerful, seductive, manipulative woman... here is just a lackey/secretary/whore for people more powerful than her. She's almost "too sweet" for the role she was playing and did a disservice to her own acting prowess and the character. If they do make a sequel, I pray they replace her.

I did really enjoy the story though and this is probably the first time on-screen that a writer has completely fleshed out Magento's drive and motivations. Fassbender is easily the star of this movie and his chemistry with McAvoy was more genuine than it probably deserved to be. The movie also had a couple clever cameos almost more as a way to tie this movie with the others in the franchise, but were fun to see none-the-less. Another reviewer said this was the best comic book movie since The Dark Knight - while I wouldn't go that far, it's definitely a cut above some of the shit that's thrown our way.

I also watched Barton Fink and I'm honestly still trying to wrap my brain around it.

I completely agree with your comments on Xmen First class. I went in with the idea of it being a "whatever" movie and I left thinking it was great. Way better then Hangover 1 part 2.

Damon Lindelof (creator/producer of Lost) said this re: January Jones: "Emma Frost's three mutant powers: telepathy, transformation to solid diamond and last but not least, sucking at acting."

Like I said, I like January Jones but she was really nothing more than (literally) something shiny to look at.

Watched 2 films this weekend.

The Last Airbender (with my kids). If not already a Razzie award winner they got robbed.

True Grit - The original is in my top 5 films, all time. Disappointed with Coen's version in comparison despite all the accolades it recieved, perhaps because the 1st version is one of my favorites. Its been said the Coen's followed the book more closely. I guess I'll have to read the book. Maybe it will grow on me. The Coen's films have a way of doing that overtime.

Enjoyed it. Some good effects and how can you ever go wrong with a Speilberg flick?

I left there thinking it was a combination of Goonies, Close Encounters and E.T.

I watched Anvil, the documentary on the band with the same name.

I enjoyed it.

Those guys never quit, and the documentary proves it. I thought it was well done-- a bit overlong, but it drives the point home.

I was wondering about this one, it's got great names and potential attached too it, but I can't shake the feeling it has a giant M, Night shamalamadingdong type let down at the end.

No, not a let down. It is worth seeing but not necessarily at the theater IMO.

I absolutely loved the "re-make"... while I enjoyed the original True Grit (and now own both versions on Blu-Ray), it felt like Jeff Bridges became Rooster Cogburn whereas the Duke just did a great portrayal of the character. I too, should probably read the book but it'll be at the end of a long list of other things I'm slowly making my way through.

I watched the "Centurion" through Netflix which was pretty good, but I was kind of doing other things at the same time and honestly, I don't think I missed much. Another great performance by Fassbender though and "Mickey" from the re-booted Doctor Who also makes an appearance. Olga Kurylenko wasn't that great, but it could be because she had to act a little more than usual due to the lack of dialogue (her character had no tongue).

TSD - this looks to be the first of two separate movies revolving around this story about a "lost" Roman Legion - how much of it is actually true?

Yeah Centurion and "the eagle" essentially tell two parts of the same story despite not being from the same production company. Centurion is about the disappearance of the 9th Legion, The Eagle is about the son of the commander of the 9th legion going to look for him.

Yes the 9th Legion simply disappears from Roman records. and we dont know what happened to it, and its last known whereabouts are in britain. The thing is there is no roman record stating it was slaughtered or simply disappeared, it simply ceases to be mentioned anymore. So stating anything as fact as to the fate of the 9th legion would be inaccurate. The only reason this raises eyebrows is because we have records and archaeological evidence tracking the activities of the other various roman legions throughout their existence, that is why this one draws such curiosity.

Unlike the Legions that Quintilius Varus lost when he was ambushed by germans in the teutonberg forest. We know they just got their asses handed to them.

So since we've no idea what happened to the 9th Legion it of course draws out all sorts of wild assumptions. The fact no evidence has been found of a giant massacre of roman soldiers in britain, its difficult to say for sure thats what happened or where they went. I dont know maybe they were abducted by aliens
<

So historically, these movies make a heavy assumption on the historical backdrop, and of course, the individual plot lines are completely fabricated. I have the centurion on DVD I havent seen the eagle yet. I like the story in centurion the action and like the rome TV series, the soldier garb is accurate for the period.

(Thats one thing that bugs me about the spartacus tv series, they have roman soldiers wearing armor that wasnt invented for like another 70 years). Thats like making a movie about WW2 2000 years from now give or take, and the US army is wearing 21st century attire and equipment. Come on now.

Jeff Bridges was excellent... easily one of my most favorite actors.

Add me to the list of those who really enjoyed the remake of True Grit.

I thought the remake was very well handled.

I watched Dear Zachary last evening. I must say that it's been a while since a film had such an emotional impact on me as this one did. I felt literally exhausted after this film. I don't think I have been that invested in a story in nearly a decade of watching films.

Dear Zachary is a documentary on another level. For those that have seen Mystic River-- dear Zachary is on that level, yet stretches beyond because the story is true, terrible, engaging, and as an audience member you cannot stop the inevitable. My wife cried through nearly all 93 minutes of it, and I kept asking myself how a family deals with such an issue.

The film deals with death-- two parents lose their son, a promising doctor. He's shot and killed by his estranged ex-girlfriend 5 times. She flees to Canada, and the system protects her. The family receives even more shocking news when she lets them know she's pregnant with her dead boyfriend's baby. A custody battle begins, and from there the filmmaker/director goes on a journey documenting a letter to the newborn baby that will never know his father-- but can know him through memories.

Anyone else looking forward to the Transformers release?

After having seen some of the filming downtown it really made me want to see how they show the destruction of downtown Chicago.

Too bad they did not film it in Vancouver and literally destroyed it, eh?
