Cool World. That's it.

I've braved many shitty films, and only one was deemed shitty enough not to finish.

I watched Red State a couple of days ago from Kevin Smith. A very refreshing departure. I felt he borrowed a bit from No Country for Old Men, but the subject matter and the way he presented it was very entertaining. I thought the first half hour (it was only 88 minutes) was very well done, although there were some writing decisions with the plot that I found odd.

The ending when John Goodman is "promoted" is also a very strong point in the film. Kevin Smith is a very talented writer of dialogue, but I feel his execution of plot falls short.
I just found it on Netflix, so I'll probably be watching it soon - but he himself has admitted his "directorial" skills are lacking. Dialogue is definitely where he shines, it's what made Mallrats much better than it deserved to be (at least in my opinion).

Mallrats is fun for me. I'm glad I saw it when I did. Plus Claire Forlani is in it. If I saw it for the first time today, I'd never watch it again.

Smith basically needs some one to advise him on directing-- or just stick with writing.

I noticed Smith had 3 camera crews-- and it shows. You can tell at certain points some one didn't really take in mind the RED camera they were using.

Well, last I heard he was "retiring" from movies anyway (after "Hit Someone" comes out)- so we'll see how long that lasts.

I was just impressed with, for a small budget film, how many big names he was able to attract to the project... although it did worry me a little that the Weinsteins passed on producing it. Smith was their golden boy for like the last 20 years, even with him trying a new genre it seemed odd that they passed. Maybe they're secret friends with Phelps?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the plot blew in that movie. There was no real character development either on the point of the main chara....scratch that, I really dont know who the hell the main charcter(s) is/are.

It was entertaining but really, it wasnt that good of a movie.

In his favor, Smith only went to film school long enough just to essentially learn what he needed. Which I think was only like a semester.

I reccomend the clerks bluray it has a pretty sweet documentary about how Smith made clerks and the time leading up to it.

Its funny that probably his most iconic character Randall Graves who seemed to be played by the perfect actor for the role wasn't even supposed to be portrayed by the actor that played him, hell he wasnt even an actor he was just smiths friend and hung out and read random parts for the other local actors auditioning for parts. Smith was actually going to play Randall himself originally, but he heard him reading a part for Jay and realized hed be better than him for Randall. Smith literally had to beg him, he did not want to be in the movie (apparently in all his scenes, he wouldnt do it unless no one else but the camera man and the actors in the scene were watching, he had horrible stage fright.)

I've never seen it. I'm aware it's one of those big cultish iconic movies, but I never got around to seeing it. David Lynch I've never been able to get into, people idolize him, and he is very good at his style and what he does, but it's never really been for me. I do love the lost highway soundtrack though haha.

I think he's great, BUT, he's definitely not everybody's cup of tea and can understand why lots of folks aren't into his films.

Agree. Blue Velvet and Elephant Man are tremedous films but I have never been able to watch Erasurehead or Dune.

I just watched Water For Elephants. Sad. Christoph Waltz is an amazing actor though his character was such an ass. I've never read the book so I didn't really know the story but I wasn't expecting so much animal cruelty, made me sad.

I saw the Harold and Kumar Christmas movie the other day and I have to say, I was actually impressed. While it could have been very hokey, they did a great job with it and it's one of the few movies where I actually got something out of the 3D (besides a clay-mation penis in the face). While the whole movie doesn't necessarily utilize the 3D, what didn't was still a good, fun Holiday story. It's up there with Die Hard, Scrooged, and Christmas Vacation for favorite seasonal movies for me.

Besides, if you don't see it - Danny Trejo comes to your house nightly and watches you sleep.

Are you able to tell us how they got NPH back without ruining anything?

Do you mean like this?

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord my soul to keep,

thy angels watch me through the night,

And keep me safe till morning's light.

...because I would so watch a movie where Danny Trejo was an angel, not the sissy harp playing kind mind you but the wrath of God type.

Blue Velvet is my favorite Lynch film but just too disturbing for a lot of people to sit through, or at least it was for people my age at the time because it was such a departure from the mid 80's John Hughes movies we took dates to in high school. Phranchk's user name always makes me think of the toast that Frank Booth and Ben (Dean Stockwell's character) make together. I'm tempted to raise an imaginary Pabst in his honor whenever he enters the chat room during a game.

I took a girl to watch Eraserhead in college at some aquaintance's dorm room one night, that lasted about five or ten minutes and she was ready for me to take her home.

I will say it's pretty funny although a very short explanation.

Sure... if that's how you need him to be. Otherwise it's just a big, scary Mexican sitting in your room watching you sleep or what Mass calls a "Friday" night.

I think the Motion Picture Association of America might need a new rating for that.

Eraserhead is very interesting.

I need to watch Blue Velvet again. It's been 20 years since I've seen it.

Speaking of David Lynch he has a new album out. I've only heard a few songs, but it's not my cup of tea. Will try to listen to the rest and see if there's anything worth listening to on it.
