A married couple heading for divorce stays a motel that is really just a trap setup by serial killers.

The Strangers! Only movie that has legitimately scared me since the Exorcist. Unless I'm wrong, since it was like a friend's cabin in the Strangers.

Lynch is a maniac, some of his stuff is exceptional, some is too far over the top. I liked Wild at Heart, but the Wizard of Oz shout out was random AF.

Sculpt you pick the next flick, I've come up with halve of them ITT.
Yeah, like the psycho sexual assault on Dern is just like... ok...

I agree. He is a ‘cilantro’ director in that you and your friends either seem to love him or hate him. I got introduced to him through Eraserhead which I still don’t undertsand but i love his use of music, even Chris Isaak, who turned out to be a pretty game performer and I like his music. He is actually a great guitarist on them hollow-bodies.
Yep, Eraserhead was the first Lynch I saw. In Heaven Everything in Fine was a very evocative song to use, used incredibly well. Isaak's Wicked Game is used nicely in Wild at Heart; the guitar sound, hollow body reverb bellow and his string touch note-bending with that reverb is really ethereal. I didn't like his yodel on that song at first, but it really works. Also excellent saturation of music in Twin Peaks.

I think he can be pretentious and overly obtuse (mulholland falls) but still has moments of brilliance.
I've actually haven't seen Mulholland Falls yet. But yeah, Lynch's work is a mixed bag with some tour de force scenes.

Nope, not the Strangers. But it's the same time period in the mid-2000's.

Next hint -- when the couple arrives at the motel the desk clerk is watching a video with people screaming bloody murder.

This is a horror film starring two fairly well known stars. The wife starred in the Underworld films, and the husband starred in Idiocracy.

the big lebowski?

Nope, next hint.

Both Aimee and the other star of the movie played by actor/actress that were household names. He, a great leader.

He is no longer alive, and just today a very close associate of his passed away.

Very old movie.

It's Mulholland Dr. My favorite is Lost Highway. Its like the precursor to Mulholland. Has Robert Blake in it before he killed his wife which makes his character even more creepy.

That made it too easy. I'll let someone else get it as i'd pass on my go anyway.

No idea. Are you saying a famous actor died today? Or just someone who was famous died today, who the film star was friends with? Who died today? I took a peak at a few lists, I didn't see any famous actors I recognized.

The actor who starred in the movie, had a 2nd career and worked extremely closely with someone who just died.
