Well the goal for every sports team every year is to win a title. It's up to the fans to deem how realistic that may be. You don't want your front office to say we are tanking because we want the 1st pick next year

They might as well have said they were tanking the seasons. Theo stated that the fans would have to be patient. I don't know how much more transparent you can be than that.

One would have to be a complete idiot to not know that they were shedding payroll, trying to replenish the farm with acquisitions, and stockpiling talent via the draft because of the poor records the past few years.

The staff gets an "A" in my book with the farm. Now it's time to see the work done at the minor league level start to equate to good grades at the major league level. BTW, a free agent or two wouldn't hurt matters any. Just sayin'!

What they need is a ace and a short term RH power hitter right now. After Baez and Bryant (Soler/Almora?) are on the team they should need a LH power hitter in LF.

I'll bet that they hope Olt steps up with Lake to keep it cheap this year. To be honest I do to so they can make a big commitment to Tanaka's bid.

There now looking up brad ausmus. Is the plan just to look at anyone that works for the San Diego Padres or the Boston Red Sox. Is this what the plan is for the front office?

He's an unknown quantity that's been given a lot of favorable press lately. (Detroit?) Kinda like Sveum2.
Either way, if he grows with the team, fine.
If not, He's just plan B between A and C and beyond.

I think they feel there is fire in Ausmus like Matheny. Of course that is pure speculation on my part.

Both former catchers who I'm sure get the point across to the players about hustle, the game being played right and being fundamentally sound.

Girardi, Matheny, Scoscia. Maybe there is something to this whole former catcher thing?

Last year they talked with Sandy Alomar Jr and Mike Maddux (among others)

This year, the wish list includes (or did) Ausmus, Acta, Girardi, Dave Martinez.

But because it also includes Renteria and Lovullo, some fans accuse Theo and Jed of only interviewing guys from SD or Boston.

In other words, these fans feel they should avoid guys from those places - guys they know and have experience with. What sense would that make?

I am not saying I prefer those two. Or not. I am just asking why, if a list of 7 or 8 guys includes two or three who have past experience with Theo or jed, they get accused of "only interviewing their guys". Dumb.

Uhm most of the candidates are former guys if theirs. Given no one wants the guys the Cubs brass wants it says volumes. To think otherwise is folly

there no doubt that they thought they were going to land joe girardi, so now their basically turning over every rock to find their guy ..

my question is why have they waited til now to talk to Ausmus, and what happened to Lovullo ? i thought they were waiting to talk to him before they made a decision..

have to think after all this time if they havent hired renteria, acta, martinez, etc yet.. that their not interested in them for whatever reason..
i remember before the sveum hire, they mentioned how they liked to talk to a lot of potentials just to get a read on how others think about certain players..
so im guessing thats basically what they did again here with the guys they know and trust..

unless there a surprise candidate out there that no one talking about, have to believe its either Ausmus or Lovullo if they talk to him..

Here is latest. AL scout who's exceptionally well connected. "Cubs front office loved Ausmus. They felt they needed a more experienced guy."

I'm calling my best sources + they all are telling me Cubs have privately been vetting Ausmus for wks. Decided they need experienced teacher

Great AL source who I know talks to Theo just gave me top notch intel. "Cubs considered Ausmus intensely but decided on experienced guy."

More from same source: "Renteria definitely front runner but they're considering talking to Lovullo. I think Renteria probably gets gig."

More con't: "Cubs really were out in front on Ausmus weeks ago but they want proven teacher. Renteria will be good. Search very thorough."

Just hung up w/great MLB source. "Cubs search has been really detailed + while Ausmus is hot name, Renteria makes more sense for this job."

Source con't: "I know Theo/Jed love Ausmus. They were in on him weeks ago + I believe they could've had him but they need a proven teacher."

"@BobWarja: @thekapman And Renteria is proven?"
From everyone I check with, yes. Has a great reputation.

I'll be happy with either of those guys as long as the manager change isn't the biggest story of the offseason

Tigers To Hire Ausmus As Manager
By Aaron Steen [November 2 at 10:36pm CST]
The Tigers will hire Brad Ausmus as manager, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. The news was first reported via Twitter by Adam Spolane of SportsRadio 610.

Ausmus, 44, is currently a special assistant with the Padres. He was previously connected with the Cubs, and also interviewed with the Mariners and Nationals. Over the course of his impressive 18-year playing career, Ausmus caught nearly 16,000 innings, appearing in an All-Star game and winning three Gold Gloves.

Ausmus becomes the third manager to be hired so far this offseason who lacks experience helming a club at the major league level, joining Bryan Price of the Reds and Matt Williams of the Nationals. We've recently seen Mike Matheny guide the Cardinals to back-to-back playoff appearances in his first two seasons as a manager, and his success may have boosted MLB executives' confidence in such candidates.

The move comes as a surprise from Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski, who noted prior to Ausmus' hiring that every skipper he's ever chosen has had managerial experience in pro ball. Dombrowski had also indicated that he had no plans to "change the culture" of the Tigers after the club's recent success, suggesting that team would opt for an internal candidate such as Lloyd McClendon, the former Pirates manager and current hitting coach in Detroit. Other names linked with the Tigers' top dugout job included Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo.

Well that is simply not true. The Tigers interview list contained three guys the Cubs interviewed or plan to interview. And two of the other places that hired managers either never really interviewed that many people (Washington apparently interviewed Ausmus and Williams before hiring Williams and the Reds just promoted from within).

The only other job that had anywhere close to the same number of interviews as the Cubs are the Mariners. The Mariners list is quite different than the Cubs, but the presumed front runner was on that list as well. So the guy the front office really wants, apparently, interviewed for three of the five open managerial spots in baseball. I think that speaks volume about his reputation around baseball.

manager hire is down to renteria and lovullo if they talk to him.
I hear most baseball analyst feel renteria is a good choice to teach the younger players and he has experience. . he fits more to what their looking for.
