Padres bench coach Rick Renteria and Rays bench coach Dave Martinez both have at least one thing in common: The ability to relate and teach the game to Latin-American players, according to those who have worked with the Chicago Cubs managerial candidates.

It's a theme that keeps coming up in the Cubs' search for a new manager. With several key prospects of Latin-American descent in the organization, including some who don't speak English, sources say the the ability to work well with Latin-American players is one of the qualities the Cubs are looking for in their next manager.

"Communication is key with [Renteria] as he has an open dialogue with the players," former Cubs broadcaster and current Padres announcer Andy Masur said via e-mail. "He has helped bridge the communications gap with some of the young Latin players as well. That could be a key ingredient for the Cubs with Starlin Castro and Junior Lake, etc."

Masur gives credit to bench coach Renteria for the progress made by young Padres players such as outfielder Will Venable and shortstop Everth Cabrera.

"He's a teacher and has a ton of baseball knowledge," Masur said.

That's probably similar to a lot of candidates, but if teaching young players -- with an emphasis on Latin-Amercians -- is a strength, then Renteria certainly checks a couple of the boxes in terms of what the Cubs are looking for.

But he's not an ex-Cub like Martinez. Team president Theo Epstein made it clear when he fired Dale Sveum on Sept. 30 that having an ex-Cub at the helm wouldn't be a bad thing, and it could even be a plus. Of course, it's not No. 1 on the list of attributes needed to be hired, but as Martinez interviews with the Cubs on Thursday, it's something to keep in mind.

"He played a lot of baseball games," former Cub David DeJesus said on Wednesday. "He was in the major leagues for a while. He has a ton of experience."

DeJesus started the season with the Cubs and joined the Rays for their playoff run late this season. He says he liked what he saw in Martinez, especially in dealing with Latin-American players, such as the hand he had in Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar's career. Plus, Martinez is a sabermetrics believer.

"He does all the numbers work for [Rays manager] Joe [Maddon]," DeJesus said.

Working with Maddon since 2007, Martinez has certainly been in a position to see some of the best in the game.

"(Martinez) has one of the best role models right next to him," DeJesus said. "That's a manager that if he was a free agent, he would be highly coveted."

Maddon is considered as good as they come in the game, and his relationship with general manager Andrew Friedman is viewed as an "ideal one," as one league executive said recently.

Renteria and Martinez have qualities that could make them attractive to the Cubs, but neither has major league managerial experience. And that means how they communicate with players in that particular role is still unknown. Their interviews this week with the Cubs front office undoubtedly will shed some light on what they can do as first-time managers. Will the Cubs role the dice on a rookie again? Stay tuned.

Hate to say it but it feels like the right choice is Martinez. He seems to fit the mold that Theo is looking for. Saber manager that understands how to use the data. Latin back ground. Ex-Cub.

Seems the only box that they need to be concerned about is track record but I believe success has more to do with talent.

I personally prefer Martinez, but Renteria does have solid managing experience...albeit in MiLB and World Classic.

The only way they are getting Martinez is by promotion. He is a bench coach and this would be a opertunity to work with a management that uses Saber metrics.

They could still hire Renteria as his bench coach. It would be a lateral move for him. But an opportunity in a new market and he still plays a role in developing some Latin talent.

Acta would feel like a conservative move where they are looking at past experience and making a safer hire. They just rolled the dice and came up short so this seems like a possibility.

Hinch feels off to me from the start. Would be shocked if they hired him.

My take is:

Martinez: 40% odds
Acta 25% odds
Renteria 25% odds
Hinch 10% odds.

Unless another player comes into this this is my view.

CSN Chicago's Dave Kaplan spoke to several sources around the game about the four candidates. Martinez is seen as the clear best choice, Renteria was praised though there were some doubts about him as a first-time manager, Acta's unsuccessful stints managing the Indians and Nationals are strikes against him and Hinch drew scathing reviews. Kaplan, for his part, thinks the Cubs should hire Brad Ausmus.

I think Martinez is the best guy available now and probably will get the job. He is Maddon's right hand man and I think the Rays style of play is what we need to emulate.....Bring up young talent and see what happens. I would be totally on board with this hire. Best plan B to girardi imho.

Mike Maddux is back in the mix. The Cubs asked the Rangers to speak to him.

Brad Ausmus?

Has been ruled out so far due I am guessing to lack of experience. The Cubs can't really gamble with this pick since how many front offices get three managers? But there is a lot to suggest that he would make a good manager.

Would this mean they are simply exhausting their options or that they didn't click with Renteria or Martinez?

Rick Renteria has become "the clear-cut favorite" among candidates for the Cubs' manager job, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets, reporting that support for the Padres bench coach is "staggering."

Chicago/big market media on a high profile team at its finest bro. Some NY newspapers had top 10 lists of who would replace Girardi if he left back in July.....shit happens

All I'm doing is sitting back, waiting. All I can do. And hope they dont colossally **** this up. I'm not holding my breath on the latter.....

Which is why I have refused to get too up or down about any candidate. It seems pretty clear that no one really knows what the front office is thinking with all the reports being that the Cubs list was basically set at 4 candidates. And now all of sudden the Cubs are asking to interview Mike Maddux and are probably going to interview Lovullo when the World Series is done.

cubs already talked to lovullo, who has said the obvious he only thinking about the redsox now, and i think the asking of permission for mike maddux now is because they werent completely satisfied with the previous candidates..

heres my thinking... teams cant hire managers during the world series, which starts wednesday.
my guess is lovullo is probably their no.1 choice right now, and if they get to interview maddux again and he interested this time around he will be choice no.2.

so, if a hire isnt made by wednesday of the ones they interviewed, then im going with one of these two to be the next manager.

Managerial/Coaching Notes: Cubs, Backman, Leyland
By Zach Links [October 20 at 10:27am CST]
Tony La Russa is available, but Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe hears that the Cubs haven't reached out to the former Cardinals skipper. Meanwhile, La Russa is telling his friends that he'd be more intereted in a front office role if he were to jump back in. Here's the latest managerial and coaching news from around baseball..

Rays bench coach Dave Martinez says that his interview with the Cubs for their vacant managerial position went "really well," writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. In addition to the standard topics, Martinez said they talked about lineup construction and game preparation and watched some in-game video sequences to go over what moves he would make. The Cubs have also interviewed Padres bench coach Rick Renteria, former Indians and Nats manager Manny Acta, and former D-backs manager A.J. Hinch.
Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo is also in the mix for the Cubs' gig, but he says that he's not thinking about it at this time, writes Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. At the same time, he was open about his desire to manage a big league team and spoke fondly of Theo Epstein.

So incredibly dreamy <3

I mean, it's so blatantly obvious that Martinez is the right choice for the Cubs. Former Cub, a plethora of playing experience, comes from a winning organization, bilingual, the ability to use advanced stats and metrics, experience with player development, works with young players.... I really don't see any gray areas. I'd do whatever necessary to land him. I'd be excited to see what kind of staff he'd assemble around him.
