I also think Martinez would be a good choice, but man is that a slap in the face of Ryno.

I'd love to wind up with one of Martinez or Renteria, if those two don't pan out I'd look at Lovullo and Acta, or Maddux but I don't really want Maddux or Acta.

Reds Hire Bryan Price As Manager
By Jeff Todd [October 21 at 9:38pm CST]
The Reds have chosen Bryan Price as the club's new manager just over two weeks after firing six-year skipper Dusty Baker. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that Price was expected to be named by the club tomorrow (via Twitter), with Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweeting shortly thereafter that Price had in fact been hired.

Price, previously the team's pitching coach, had been rumored to be one of two leading candidates (along with Jim Riggleman) to take the helm in Cinci. Despite two division titles and three post-season berths in the past four seasons under Baker, the decision was made to part ways after Baker apparently told the front office that blame should fall on his shoulders rather than those of his hitting coach. According to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Enquirer, Price has been a well-regarded keeper of the club's arms and would become one of only a handful of current MLB managers who never played in the bigs.

I also think Martinez would be a good choice, but man is that a slap in the face of Ryno.

I guarantee every cubs fan, had Ryno been hired would be having his head called for after these past 2 seasons....partly because it wouldn't have mattered who was the manager when a gigantic turd is trying to be sold as filet mignon. Also partly because cubs fans are the 2nd dumbest fanbase I've ever encountered (Philly Flyers #1)

I cant stand Theo Epstein and criticize almost every one of his moves......mainly because they've been Special person......

But he made the smart decision at the time to hire Sveum.

Had we hired Ryno, and Boston hried Sveum--who they missed out on because Sveum picked the cubs (more money)--and Sveum was in the WS while we got to see two exciting seasons of the best, most fundamental baseball I've ever seen (sarcasm); I guarantee you all would be riding the 'why didn't we hire Sveum!' bandwagon.

Nothing but whining and revisionist history of incredibly stupid fans.

Stop it. Ryno aint the manager. Get over yourselves.

Hire Davey Martinez already......he's clearly the best candidate, meets all of the 'small market team' needs as well as learning from a 'great' (I have my reasons for disliking Maddon, but he's good) manager; and Detroit knows it if Mattingly stays in LA--the wild card in all of this.

Or--this is incredibly unlikely because he loves the booth too much and is smart enough to avoid this one car funeral--Bob Brenly would be the only other name I want.

Sooner or later the cubs have to stop being the punch line......although I've learned holding my breath is a dumb thing to do.

And so the Reds' window shuts. I like the hire, the guy deserved it. But I question whether or not the Reds have the firepower to get back to the playoffs. No Arroyo, no Choo, Phillips wants out, so notable guys they gotta replace.

I expect them to hang around till June/July, make a big splash trade and miss the playoffs with 84-87 wins next year. Unless they do the unlikely and spend bigtime for Bobi Cano.

They do not have the market size to run out a payroll over 130 mil. They will have to shed deals and back fill with the farm as they go.

I don't believe they interviewed lovullo yet.. Think he said he's focused on the Sox at the moment. Plus we aren't expected to have a manager till the winter meetings at the latest.

It'll be Martinez or Lovullo.

If we're still waiting for another week.. More and more it looks like Lovullo.

I believe it is dragging out because:

Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo is also in the mix for the Cubs' gig, but he says that he's not thinking about it at this time, writes Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. At the same time, he was open about his desire to manage a big league team and spoke fondly of Theo Epstein.

I believe this will drag out until the end of the series where they can talk to Torey.

Agree that Lovullo is the holdup. Come on Boston and sweep the series so we can get this wrapped up.

MLB would also get very mad if the Cubs made an announcement during the World Series. They do not want anything to take away from the World Series so they make all teams hold back on any big announcements.

I'm very aware that the Cubs can't make any announcements during the World Series, but if they had their guy it would have been announced right before the start of the Series like the Lincecum extension news. They are waiting to get a crack at Lovullo, and maybe more if the Wittenmeyer article is correct that the list is actually 7 candidates.

When did the FO try to sell this team as a 'filet mignon?'

They might know already who they are hiring. It is frowned up to make big announcements during the WS.

heard they just finished their interview tonight with renteria ans second round of interviews to begin next week.. meaning there no mystery candidates as reported. .
just wondering are the cubs the only team that goes through multiple rounds of interviews and take weeks to name a manager...
of who they interviewed, its either renteria or martinez..pick one and move on

Managerial analysis: Hinch not the guy

MESA, Ariz. -- As the Chicago Cubs take a break from their manager search -- at least publically -- for the World Series, there are at least four candidates waiting to hear if they will be hired.

The Cubs have divulged that San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria, Tampa Bay Rays coach Dave Martinez, and former managers A.J. Hinch and Manny Acta have all interviewed.

Some reports have said Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Boston Red Sox coach Torey Lovullo will be contacted, but neither has been yet. Lovullo will have to wait until after the World Series to get a serious look. If there was interest in Maddux, he probably would have been contacted by now, so those reports out of Texas might be exaggerated.

So what of the four we know about?

If there is one thing scouts at the Arizona Fall League have in common, it's having an opinion -- on players and potential Cubs managerial candidates, for example. Most scouts have been in the game a long time, and even executives admit they are the lifeblood of baseball.

Multiple scouts said they agree that Hinch would not be the right man for the job. If the Cubs want an emphasis on communication with young players, then Hinch is the wrong guy, they say. In this case, throwing out his bad run as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009-2010 would be a mistake. Some scouts say he didn't have a good team, but they also say he didn't do a good job communicating his message, something crucial to the Cubs' development.

Acta is well thought-of in the scouting world, but a few wondered if having little experience in a winning situation might come back to haunt him. He was "beat up" twice and "spit out" as one scout put it, amassing a career record of 372-518 managing the Washington Nationals and Cleveland Indians. Can he handle another year or two of losing without veering from the Cubs' plan?

Like many in baseball, scouts respect the way Tampa Bay has developed its organization and figure Martinez must have learned something positive from manager Joe Maddon. But particulars about Martinez's abilities to manage elicited the fewest opinions. The scouts just don't know.

As you might expect, Renteria was the consensus choice among many scouts as the right man for the job -- at least among the four the Cubs have interviewed so far. Going from bench coach in San Diego to manager of the Cubs is a huge leap in scrutiny and attention, but scouts say Renteria has the demeanor for it. They claim his teaching is top-notch and that he's simply a likeable guy. Does that mean players will want to play for him, or does it mean they'll try to take advantage of him? It can go either way.

The Cubs haven't said it officially, but the list of candidates seems to be expanding. After all, none of the four interviewed has been hired yet. They, and Cubs fans, will have to wait for the World Series to end before knowing who will lead the team going forward.

When they said the goal every year is to win the world series and kept and still keep ticket prices absurdly high for a 97+ loss team.

Well the goal for every sports team every year is to win a title. It's up to the fans to deem how realistic that may be. You don't want your front office to say we are tanking because we want the 1st pick next year
