I always respected Girardi and this made me respect him more. I could not be more disappointed in his decision, but he stayed for the perfect reason. His family didn't want to leave. He could have earned more money and probably had more job security but his kids wanted to stay at the same school. Would have loved nothing more than to have Girardi as our manager. Now that Maddux isn't even in the discussion it is even more of a disappointment. We should have just kept Sveum if we planned on getting his clone. Acta would be a C- hire IMO, and the rest of the guys would be D/F.

Disappointed? I am. However, it is early in the process and they are probably a few weeks away from any kind of a decision. I am sure their will be many rumors, candidates and what have you that will interview or are thought to be interviewing for the job.

The important thing is for the farm to keep developing and producing talent and for the FO to get some quality players surrounding them when they arrive. If they both do their part, Mickey Mouse can run the show for all I care.

Ozzie says he wants the job

That would be a train wreck. Ozzie hates young players.

I wouldn't wish Ozzie on anyone, other than the Tigers.

Now that Girardi is out, whoever they sign better not be the biggest new name coming into the 2014 season or we are in for another long ride

If Baez and Bryant don't pan out, we are in for a long ride anyways. I don't care who is driving the bus.

Renteria has coached through the Padres organization, been a 1st base coach as well as bench coach, and coached the Mexican national team in the WBC.

Latin influence could be a very big play in this with Castro, Castillo, Strop, Alcantara, Baez, Soler and others. Of course, Acta and Alomar also fit with that theory.

Who honestly knows?

Stupid to even consider A.J Hinch..

But this is the Chicago Cubs......where a steaming, 7 pound shit caused by Chipotle and brussell sprouts can be put on tens of thousands if idiots' plates and be considered filet mignon......

Fired Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel is still trying to decide whether to accept an offer from his former club to do a combination of PR work, player development, and advising of GM Ruben Amaro Jr. He talked about his decision on MLB Network Radio with hosts Brad Lidge (his former closer) and Jeff Joyce. (Audio link.) Manuel said that he wants to stay in baseball, and particularly emphasized that he "still want to manage."

Martinez is an interesting choice because of how long he has been with Maddon. As a former Cub, I would think a lot of fans could get behind him as the pick, too.

Dave Martinez will be interesting. First year as bench coach was the first year the Rays were good. Madden was Scocia's bench coach so I can see a passing down knowledge. Dave has worked (learned under) Madden for 5 years. It is worth taking serious.

Of course they would, they are Cubs fans.

That's why most endorse Girardi, or Sandberg, or Greg Maddux, and because Mike Maddux is Greg's brother, him too.

I wonder if Carlos Zambrano would be interested? :smug2:

Well, since they replaced Quade with Sveum, do you think fans are going to get excited and buy tickets in the off-season, if they hire another Quade or Sveum?

Sandberg had very good success as an MiLB manager. He earned respect by starting back in the bus leagues. Girardi? He's a highly successful manager. I'm not aware of a bunch of Cub fans endorsing Greg Maddux, who has been an instructor and not a game coach, for the skipper position. Mike Maddux is well known of his own volition as a coach. This is why Cub fans also mention Maddon and others who have demonstrated success. Martinez fits the Cubs FO philosophy having worked with Maddon for many years. That's a successful team. It isn't like hiring an assistant coach from a loser organization.

Cub fans are nostalgic. If push came to shove, not all but a lot of Cubs fans would rather see one of their own if given the chance.

IF a choice between Bochy, Maddon, and Girardi came up, don't you think Cubs fans would rather want Girardi even though all have been successful?

Same goes with Sandberg. I would bet a ton that if it came down to Sandberg or Francona, you would see this board falling all over themselves to hire Sandberg even though Francona has had enormous success compared to Sandberg.

Ozzie says he wants the job

If the cubs decided to go all Latin, then I'd consider it. I'll give Ozzie this, he's got common sense when it comes to pulling starting pitchers and he can work the Chicago media.....

Just hire Davey Martinez. Clearly he's the best of the rest......though I have a feeling like Boo that Rick Renteria will be the guy.

i like to see Martinez. I like having a guy who been around Winning. Acta clearly never won as manager. Hinch also never won. SDP bench coach been part of SDP which means they have 1 winning season in last decade? Martinez has been with a great manager in Maddon and i like to see him get a chance. He fits all the criteria to me

I'd go Rick Renteria-Acta-Alomar-Maddux(just kick the tires since there isn't much else to do)
