Four million, no way.

I suspect John Scott will "play" 60 games or more from the press box. So I wouldn't put him in as a 4th liner.

Does anyone remember what happened with Kyle Calder in arbitration? Who won and did the Hawks walk away from the deal or did they do a sign and trade? Just thinking of the same happening here with Niemi.

From wilkipedia: On August 2, 2006, Calder was awarded a $2.9 million dollar contract for the 2006–07 season by an arbitrator. The Blackhawks decided to accept it,[1] and then on August 4, 2006, Calder was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Michal Handzus.[2] At the trade deadline, the Flyers sent him back to Chicago for a third-round draft pick and Lasse Kukkonen. Chicago immediately sent him to the Detroit Red Wings for Jason Williams.[3] Calder scored his first goal as a Red Wing during his first shift.[4] He signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings on July 2, 2007.
I love this quote from the ChicagoNow article...

Nothing against Shawn Lalonde, who is a very good prospect, but I have to think the answer to that question is a resounding YES, especially after the season Sopel had last year. Sopel was actually quite good last year and I doubt Lalonde can play consistently at that level for all 82 games next year.
For that matter, I doubt Sopel can play consistently at that level for all 82 games next year.

While he had his moments because of speed there's no doubt he did it last year. Especially in the playoffs where it counted.

Based on his comments on the Score yesterday, this may be the relevant question:

Can Zito survive if Niemi's arbitration award is less than what the Hawks are offering?

Edit: See the Tukka Rask contract

Well, looks like I'm definitely in the minority

I think Niemi *might* be worth 4 million. I truly do. Obviously we won't find out for a while, whether he is here or not, but I think it's a good possibility.

That lineup looks fine to me. For everyone saying that the lineup has so many holes, are you implying that Kopecky and Reasoner are world beaters compared to Dowell and Skille or Makarov? Please. I was excited about seeing Dowell this season either way.

Kopecky and Reasoner are both good players. But if you can replace them with young, cheap, hungry players that are trying to find their place in the lineup, while simultaneously getting enough money to sign your STANLEY CUP WINNING goaltender, you do it. Just my opinion.

Remember folks, two offseasons ago, every Hawks forum on the internet was up in arms over the Robert Lang trade. "Where is the center depth?! Dave Bolland isn't ready for this big of a role!" Trust our scouting, trust our depth, trust the youth.

Believe me, I'm not in the "sign Niemi no matter what" camp. I'm not completely sold on him being worth 4 million. But if we lose him, I worry that he might be. He showed me enough last season to worry about losing him.

Hey, RK - you're a goalie, right? When you watch Niemi play, do you get nervous?

I find that he doesn't see everything that is happening around him, and that initially he didn't go down that quick but by the end of the playoffs he was down on the ice much sooner and getting out of position. Do you think it was just nerves? Or maybe that with some good goaltending coaching he can improve his positioning and style?

I don't know if I'm confident enough with him to pay him $4 million a year -especially if its more than a three year contract.

I don't think RK play's goal, I believe that's Klemm.

I would be inclined to agree for the most part, but I am EXTREMELY doubtful he can keep it up. there were times last year where it really looked like he was falling apart, but usually made up for it later in the game, so it was forgiven. I just don't see him being able to repeat, especially on the Thrashers.

Bwaaaaa hahaha...... correct.

RK plays, well, never mind.

PLEASE keep in mind that last season was Niemi's rookie season!

He helped lead us to that heavenly place.

Lets go $2-$2.5 M and get it done!~

Another note about that line-up: If Skille and Makarov are part of the problem for you, you're in for a disappointment come October.

Why would Skille take a pay cut unless he was practically guaranteed a roster spot? Same with Makarov coming over from Russia. Those two are #1 and #1A on my list of prospects with a chance of roster spots in my opinion. Especially considering potential and price.

No team in their right mind would pay Niemi $4m a year. He still just has 64 games to his name, Stanley Cup or not. Cam Ward signed a 3 year $8m contract after his Stanley Cup year and he won the Conn Smythe to boot.

That's in itself makes the Halak money a total head scratcher. Stop this it's the 2nd time I've agreed with you today!

Obviously if we can keep him at 3 mil or less, even better. Zito's interview this morning just sent me into a slight panic. That guy is an epic cocksmoke. No way he accepts 3 mil.

Pay cut???? He probably made 100K playing in Rockford last year.

The number you saw in print was his cap hit; not what he actually made.

65k in Rockford last year. He did play 6 games in Chicago though where he would have gotten his NHL Salary. First I've ever seen the Hawks pay a minor league player more than the minimum. Not that it's not happened, I just have never seen it.

Skille had some problems with the Hawks because he made a big deal about the Hogs/Hawks paying 55k per year while the rest of the AHL payed 65k. It was one of the reasons they were not to happy with him at one point.

I understand that. But IMO this is either a 1-way contract or a "promise" that he's gonna be in the NHL this year.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)
While language for many arbitration issues is described in the CBA, there is nothing describing limits for salary amounts.
The only language I've seen was that 1 player could not make more than 20% of a teams cap.
