Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)

There are a number of different ways to go and I guess it’s up to Stan and I to try and find something that makes sense for everybody,” Zito said Wednesday on “The Mully & Hanley Show” on WSCR-AM 670. “Antti would like to stay and like to be a part of this thing and I guess the onus is on us to figure out a way to do it.”

Despite Niemi’s impressive showing during the Hawks’ drive to the Stanley Cup championship, Zito said he’d rather not leave it up to an arbitrator to make sure his client gets a nice raise from his salary of $827,000 last season.

“We’re confident we have a good case, but with that said, there is always risk,” Zito said of the unpredictability of a hearing. “It’s just like going to court ... Did O.J. (Simpson) really not do it?”

So with the offer being match to Hjammer, what if we see Campbell traded?

That change your opinion?[/quote]

I can't see that happening barring a miracle (although stranger things have happened...). I like Campbell a lot, and he is a key in out great D, but based on who you asked, he's overpaid by about 2-3M, which is a tough pill to swallow for any team, and undoubetedly we'd either have to send someone else out we don't want to lose with him, or we'll be taking back a bloated contract that doesn't help us.

The way I see it--right now with who we have, I would stand pat, let Niemi play out and if whatever he gets awarded we can't match, then walk. After all, virtually the same top-6 and the same top-4 that's in play were virtually the same team that did come back from 5-0 deficit to win in o/t. We just need a "good enough" goalie. Breaking the top-4 or top-6, which aren't broken, would IMHO be worse than, dare I say, icing a tandem of Crawford/Toivenen.

Plus, news about Marakov helps, and hopefully Bickell and one of Hendry/Boynton pan out.

Re: Makarov signs 2 year Deal

Arbitration is going to be a funny thing. Although this is the wrong thread for it.

You have several goalies that signed for well less than the 2.5 mil. Including the one that lost in the SC Finals but was a key reason their team was there.

Then you have Halak who has TWICE as many NHL games as Niemi and TWICE as many years in the NHL, getting his rediculous contract.

It's like any court case. The Hawks will go in with their evidence, which is the other goalies and experience of 64 NHL total games Niemi has, verses Zito's only evidence in Halak.

It could very well go bad for Niemi Evan. While I want to be like you and take the worst case, I think this could benefit the Hawks. Primarily because Niemi has ONLY 64 games in the NHL. IMO his demand of 3 mil plus is ludacriss.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)

I'm sure its in this thread somewhere....but is it one or the other?

Hawks offer 1.8mil...Niemi wants 3.5mil....

Arbitrator listens to both sides "why" and one wins, one loses.... He doesnt find middle ground. Middle ground is only obtained between team and agent, right?

Zito may get to the point here BEFORE the 29th and say take the contract. It's just as risky for the Player as it is the Hawks at this point. ANYTHING can happen during the arbitration hearing. The evidence NOT to give Niemi over 3 mil far out weighs that to do so IMO.

I thought it was one or the other though....both teams state their case (which can get ugly)....but the arb decides "who's right"

While language for many arbitration issues is described in the CBA, there is nothing describing limits for salary amounts.

Can the Hawks sign Niemi at $4m without losing a core piece?

Believe it or not, yes.

Troy Brouwer (1.025) Jonathan Toews (6.3) Patrick Kane (6.3)

Marian Hossa (5.275) Patrick Sharp (3.9) Jack Skille (0.6)

Viktor Stalberg (0.850) Dave Bolland (3.375) Igor Makarov (0.552)

Bryan Bickell (0.600) Jake Dowell (0.525) John Scott (0.512)

Duncan Keith (5.538) Brent Seabrook (3.5)

Niklas Hjalmarsson (3.5) Brian Campbell (7.1)

Jordan Hendry (0.600) Shawn Lalonde (0.773)

Antti Niemi (4.0)

Hannu Toivonen (0.550)

Move Kopecky and Reasoner and it is possible.

I'm not liking the makeup of that team, unless the top 2 lines play 90% of the game (defense included)

I would let Niemi walk before icing that team, looks like it has wayyy too many holes.

At 100K in cap space, several short-term injuries means a line up of less than 20 players.

Re: Can the Hawks sign Niemi at $4m without losing a core pi

I love this quote from the ChicagoNow article...

People may worry about a Lalonde/Hendry defense pairing, but think about it: Is Lalonde/Hendry going to be any worse than Sopel/Hendry?

Nothing against Shawn Lalonde, who is a very good prospect, but I have to think the answer to that question is a resounding YES, especially after the season Sopel had last year. Sopel was actually quite good last year and I doubt Lalonde can play consistently at that level for all 82 games next year.

Re: Can the Hawks sign Niemi at $4m without losing a core pi

Sopels best attribute other than laying his life on the line shot blocking was his PK. He could be in the top 5 PK Defensemen in the league. That will be severely missed with Lalonde/Hendry. In fact if all Cullimore did was PK, and NEVER skate on the ice other than PK, I'd have him there. Another very good PK defensemen.
