Isn't it always. I think the chat should be up to discuss the events of the off season.

See what the salary cap can do to even the fans. Who knew winning the cup would be this hard on us.

That salary cap sucks and avoids contact, it should be waived or sent to the AHL.

I think it's keeping parity in the league. As we are seeing right now. In order to be a contender year in and year out you will need to rebuild part of your team. Especially if that team is loaded with Character, talented players. They will deem more money and will move under the current Cap.

The 4 million off of the top of the Cap I have a problem with. Especially the Con Smythe.

I'm sure when the CBA is revisited in the up coming years they will address the front ended contracts and bonus overages. Will be interesting to see if the NHLPA and NHL can do it without controversy. Man we'd have really been fucked had the Cap not gone up and they NHLPA hadn't voted for the 5%.

Really the Conn Smythe thing is a fucking joke, it makes absolutely no sense. It pisses me off so much I don't even know how to ***** about it.

Just blame it on the Campbell Contract as some IDIOTS are.

Yea, I'm just glad he's locked up, no matter what the **** his contract is, he was HUGE in the playoffs.

Is there any language in the CBA that prevents the Hawks from signing Niemi prior to the arbitration and then trading him? Could be the way to get a goalie at decent terms.

Agree and disagree.

Scooter knew all throughtout last season what 88's potential bonus was. He gambled that 88 wouldn't make top 10 in scoring. He lost. He acted like the federal government and put off paying bills until future periods. Now it is fuking him in the rear big time.

The Conn Smythe we both can agree with. Playoff bonuses should not count against the cap EVER!!!

Scooter and McDick for brains went for it last year and WON. Good for them. Now they will have to pay the piper. All 30 teams play by the same rules; Red Wings have been dealing with this kind of stuff for years. Good organizations find a way to make it work. Time will tell if we are a GREAT organization.

Redwings have won exactly ONE Cup since the Salary Cap inception. While "dealing with it", they have not been a perennial winner. 3 of the 4 Cups they have in the last 11 years were PRE lockout, and one was completely bought.

I read through it twice and don't see any language that prevents that. If that's done then you are kind of screwed as OTHER GM's know what your cap is.

Borrowing from Donald Rumsfeld, the Hawks are dealing with a known known(Hammer) and a known unknown(Niemi's arb).

With Niemi, the Hawks can't take much over 2.5 million with Niemi if they keep Hammer. Anything over 3.0, kiss him goodbye. I'm not privy to the negotiations between Stosh and Zito, but I'm guessing Zito wants over 3.5. Talk to a team, say the Islanders, see if they have an interest in Niemi at a multi year deal close to Zito's terms. If they bite, perhaps the Hawks can obtain Rolson at 2.5 with one year remaining.

If the arbitration breaks the bank and the Hawks have to walk away, Niemi's a UFA. Is he going to a team like NYI? Who knows. But the Islanders need to spend money to get to the cap floor.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)

I need some clarification on the arbitration process. I heard Niemi is asking for $4-5M per season. If the Hawks are only offering $2-2.5M per season what happens in arbitration? I thought if you go to arbitration the judge decides one way or the other which means Niemi either makes the $4-5M he is asking for or the $2-2.5M the Hawks want to pay. Let's say Niemi wins in arbitration - what then? We know we can't afford that but how do we get out of it? Do we just hope we can trade him? I'm not that up to speed on the process here so would appreciate some thoughts on what our options are.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)

The more I think about the Hjammer/ Niemi situation the more that I want Niemi

resigned before Hjammer. I have debated it over and over and come to realize, with

much difficulty I might add, that I believe we are much weaker at filling the goalie roll

with the Niemi loss then we are at the Hjammer loss. You can debate it to infinity but

that is where my opinion lies at this point.

I prefer to be an optimist here and hope that both are back next season.

Unless they get Turco. After watching the Nasvhille series all over again the past two days, I want Hjarlmarsson resigned.

We will disagree on this on. I still consider this past season to be Niemi's rookie season and that was the first round of the playoffs with Niemi having never been there before.

I know it can be debated but we will have to agree to disagree. Lets hope, somehow, we are both happy with the final outcome.

I wasn't saying that because Niemi was bad, rather Hjarlmarsson was very good. Again your goalie is only as good as your defense. Hawks have the best top four in the league and won the Cup. No surprise.

Keep the D together. They are still going to miss Sopel on the PK.
