Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)

I keep going back and forth...I watched Nashville and thought we can't lose Hammer and now I am watching Vancouver and am thinking we can't lose Niemi...

The only thing I know for sure we CANNOT lose Sharp he and Hossa play really well together and I don't think I realized that during the season...

It is nice to watch these games again without being so nervous you can kind of look back at the games and analyze them

I wasn't saying that because Niemi was bad, rather Hjarlmarsson was very good. Again your goalie is only as good as your defense. Hawks have the best top four in the league and won the Cup. No surprise.

Keep the D together. They are still going to miss Sopel on the PK.
This.

Every thing you need to know is on the previous page...

http://www.nhlfa.com/CBA/cba_agreement12.asp
Just read it. Interesting that the NHL has a 'walk-away' clause for 1 and 2 year contracts. That's nice. Other leagues have binding arbitration so going to aribtration means the player is essentially 'signed' and just a matter of which salary the arbiter decides in favor of.

Here's what's missing though - there is no 'walk-away' clause for contracts of more than 2 years. Niemi is looking for a long term deal at $4-5M per so if he wins let's say a 5 year contract at that price I'm not sure the Hawks can walk-away from that deal per the arbitration rules.

I was under the impression they can only arbitrate a 1 or 2 year contract. And the 2 year would be upon the request of the team.

After re-watching Games 5 & 6, and SJ game 4...

I've come to the conclusion that it's a hell of a lot easier to find a cheap goalie that would be "Good enough" behind arguably the best top-4 D in the league than it would be to find a mobile #4 D-man who can perfectly compliment campbell for disrt cheap.

Generally, that's true -- the party against whom arbitration was demanded (the team, in this instance) selects whether the award will be for a 1-year or a 2-year contract. But, as I posted in the Hjammer thread last week, because Niemi is within 1 year of becoming Group 3 UFA eligible, the award can only be for a 1-year contract.

To me, that weighs in favor of matching the offer sheet to lock up Hjammer for 4 years, then wait and see what the arbitrator awards for a 1-year contract for Niemi to decide whether to let him walk as an UFA or, if the award is affordable, to sign him. It makes no sense to let Hjammer walk and then end up with only a 1-year contract with Niemi who would then walk as an UFA next year anyway. The other scenario would be to lock up Niemi long-term before the arbitration, but that would require Niemi to play ball, which it doesn't seem he wants to do. If they go that route, they'd probably have to get it done before the right of first refusal expires on Hjammer, lest they miss out on that opportunity and then get nothing done with Niemi before arbitration. If it comes down to an either/or situation, I'd rather they spend the money on Hjammer than Niemi.

Okay that helps - so arbitration is only limited to 2 years. Sometimes I wonder if Niemi is playing hard ball due to what happened to him 2 years ago when the Hawks signed him and then had to send him to the minors because we couldn't get rid of Khabi. I'm sure that didn't sit well with him. So maybe that's a factor in his decision - thinking the organization screwed him over so he's going to take every penny he can and not cut them a break. I take Hjarms over Niemi but then I wonder who's my netminder.

The local media is reporting talks with Neimi are on-going. At least they're not just waiting for the hearing.

National media (LeBrun) is reporting Campbell is being shopped.

So with the offer being match to Hjammer, what if we see Campbell traded?

That change your opinion?

No surprise that Campbell is being shopped... as long as they have a plan I'm OK. With Campbell gone, it gives us much more flexibility but is he too important to the line-up?

I figure it this way, Sharp > Campbell... and the reason everyone loves Sharp is because he is important and his contract is brilliant. Campbell, well he is important, but his contract is awful -- don't give me this shit "you have to look past the contract" because we are at the point where it DOES matter.

I hope we can keep him, regardless, but if he has to go I completely understand.

I think that is a tough comparison to make. I can only think of a couple dmen off the top of my head who move the puck as well as Campbell, in the game today at current skill level/age. I can think of many scorers of the caliber of Sharp. But for the money? that sure makes it tougher. But Campbell takes the blue line at will. That is an incredible talent to have on your team.

No point really just ramblins...
I wouldn't put too much stock in that. Dale was in love with every mega-bucks free agent he ever signed. But then like clockwork, the following spring he sent a fax to every gm in the league that each of his free agent signings was available. That legacy continues, the Hawks are desperately trying to unload Campbell and Huet. -5Minutes

Love to see a link stating that. That seems to be non sense to me.
Ok, so I posted it two weeks before the link came out. But here it is:

Ron, come on. I for sure mentioned Sharp a long time ago, i believe my very first post talking about the cap causualties. But really who cares? Do you have to reply to every one of my posts. Just read peoples thoughts, post yours, move on. It be simple.

And though you have posted 237 times in the last 24 hours that Huet is not on the roster next year, i posted that 5 months ago at the same time you were posting that Huet was "still going to have a role in this thing." Classic RK.

I said "Huet could still play a role" yes. He could have. No telling if Neimi were to get hurt. I have explained the Huet situation because people are still confused.

You make something up and "luckily" now have an article to concur with what you made up. Awesome buddy. Classic Larry or excuse me - 5 minutes.

And sharp has been mention many times. Why, because he's Cap friendly and kicks ass on the ice. No way is he going anywhere.

I posted what was obvious at the time. Didn't need a link.

Of course if i was you i could have made up a bullshit claim of "inside info." But making stuff up is your thing, not mine.

Claim? I've backed up my shit many many times. All you need to do is look to your Left and the proof is all around me. To my right, behind me, to my left. Or ask anyone else that knows me to tell you how clueless that comment really is.

Classic Larry. I'll have a picture for you sometime in August there big boy.
