Anyone know what time Niemi's arbitration hearing is set for and how long these things usually last? And will the decision be posted immediately?
If a deal isn't Hammered out, the decision will be on Monday or Tuesday.

Here's a question for y'all.....do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing the arbitration is taking place before the convention? Do you think Niemi would have been swayed one way or the other?

Let's say for sake of argument he wants 4 mill. Do you think after the opening ceremonies, seeing all the love the crowd will heap on him, he would soften up a bit and knock down his asking price?

I know his agent would probably have something to say about it, but I am not talking about him.

I hate to say it but it seems that it's about money for Niemi. He's won a Cup and wants to be paid.

Just my opinion but if he doesn't know how much the fans love this team after the parade he never will.

Nah...you're a sweetheart...but if that happened, it would be the single blade of grass that turned the dromedary into a paraplegic--so to speak.

Do we know how long the team then has to decide?

but wait, Whaler said no way to this???

"The scuttlebutt in the Turco scenario signals he will sign in Chicago at a deep discount. Turco ends up on different team than the group which won the Cup but the Hawks could still make a lot of noise in the playoffs. If Turco plays well he has a chance to be a sought after unrestricted free agent next summer.

Turco is at a much different point in is career than Niemi. Money isn’t as important as proving he can still be a NHL starting goal keeper. Evidently, if the rumors are true, Turco feels Chicago gives him the best opportunity to show he still has some gas left in his tank"
Good summary of the present situation from Al Cimaglia.
Good summary that goes into the shitter about half the way into the article.

Judging by the way money is being thrown around in the KHL Niemi probably could sign a fat contract there for nearly double what a NHL team would offer. If a tax exempt payday in Russia doesn’t work there is always the Swedish Elite League.

If the Hawks choose to take the arbitration, Niemi's choices are the NHL or KHL. All other "professional" leagues have reciprocity with the NHL. KHL is the only exception.

Turco is at a much different point in is career than Niemi. Money isn’t as important as proving he can still be a NHL starting goal keeper. Evidently, if the rumors are true, Turco feels Chicago gives him the best opportunity to show he still has some gas left in his tank.

The only Turco rumor was him rejecting a 3 year 2 million per deal from the Flyers.

Before the San Jose offer sheet to Hjalmarsson a two year $5 million dollar contract would have been a distinct possibility. One has to believe Niemi would sign such a deal today. The issue now is the Hawks would have to make another trade to have enough cap space to make that offer. The Marty Reasoner cap clearing move was only enough for a Bryan Bickell re-signing.

Not true.

Realistically there is no easy way out of this mess unless Niemi signs on the dotted line for well below $2 million per year. That might be almost as unlikely as an arbitration award above $4 million per season.

I'm not sure of an exact numerical value of well below $2 million. If true, then Marty Turco would be looking at a contract of well below $2 million.

Marty Turco (born August 13, 1975)

Look for Turco to sign an incentive laden contract after August 13, 2010 when he turns 35 years old and that type of contract is available to him.

If I read that correctly he has to be 35 or older by June 30th of the year in which he signs the incentive laden contract, thus it does not apply this year/season since he turns 35 in August. Then again I'm no CBA expert...

I said no way to what? I've always been on the record of saying that if Niemi gets awarded $2.5M or more, the Hawks should let him walk. I'm not a big fan of high priced goalies, not when you have the top-4 defenders locked up like the Hawks do.

Regardless of what Cimaglia may write, I don't see how Turco would turn down $2 million per year from the Flyers and then suddenly jump at $1.5 million from the Hawks. Where's the logic in that?

My take is that Turco's agent is no different than Zito. They both want a lot more money than the market seems willing to pay. What that means in the end is anyone's guess, but I think Turco would probably retire over facing (in his mind's eye) the humiliation of playing for such a pittance.

The logic (for Turco) would be playing for a much better team that makes him look better, thereby netting him a larger contract after his stint with the Hawks.

From what I've seen the past 2 seasons the tank is empty. That guy was a sieve letting in goals.

He had a better SV% than Niemi last year facing 600+ more shots... but ok.
