Ahh, just wondered why you were coming after me when everyone else was already

going after each other for their opinions. Maybe I said it too harshly but all that I meant was it is laughable this time of year with all the speculations abounding.

Leighton signed with Flyers for 2 years $1.5M Y1 and $1.6M Y2. Might be a good base of comparison in Niemi's arbitration, if they actually go to arbitration.

That's great to hear. The numbers for Niemi that I've heard bounced around all seem much higher than that so hopefully that bodes well for our chances of keeping him at a reasonable price.

I'm very surprised Leighton signed for under 2 mil./per year.

I'm not. He was CLEARLY an inferior netminder in the SCF.

He was no worse than Niemi. Infact are you sure neimi's SV% wasn't lower than Leightons?

The Flyers D was NO WHERE NEAR as good as the Hawks. I'd say that was far more obvious than Leighton being inferior to Niemi.

[quote name="suomistewart"]Reader beware:

Of course it more BS from DickLund, but now he's claiming Niemi's getting a big offer sheet, despite the fact that his own website is claiming he has an arbitration hearing pending:

I guess I wouldn't be surprised. I keep seeing a lot of stories about San Jose making him an offer. But if that's true, I don't want the Hawks to match -- even if they can. Niemi was fine in the playoffs up until the Finals, and he'll be a good goalie. But I still think the Hawks' D had something to do with how good he was in a lot of games. With their D, the Hawks are a team that doesn't need to overspend on goalies.

I do hope the Hawks can re-sign Niemi but they shouldn't go overboard to do so.

Exactly. Not that a goalie isn't important, and Niemi bailed our asses oot several times.

But the Hawks defense is superior to most teams in the league. That's why we're champions.

I'm not arguing that. I that I predicted we would win based on several factors -- defense being one. But the other was goaltending -- clearly Leighton wilted under the pressure of the SCF and Niemi did not. He was far stronger mentally than Leighton.

I disagree to some extent. I don't think either goalie had a fantastic final. Both teams won and lost as a team. With the D of each standing out. If Niemi was to ask for over 3 per year, knowing what Leighton just signed for, I'm not sure you keep him. Especially not with only one full year under his belt, IE Mason last year after his phenomenal year.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!"

Leighton was not good in the scf, including giving up 2 soft goals in game 6. Every gm in the league was watching that, and thus nobody was calling Leighton's agent with offers. So he resigned with Philly. Niemi on the other hand was the better goalie, and the winning goalie. So offers are much more likely to be coming his way. We'll see what he does. But not the huge offers one might expect. GM's may finally be wary of offering a goalie a huge deal based on one good season or playoff run. Got to prove it over time. Which is why Nabby and Turco will get more $$ than Leighton and Niemi, but not as much as they would in the past.

Can any of you stat folks find me the GA and SV% of Leighton and Neimi in the Finals?

I believe Niemi was .880, Leighton was .856. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I know Leighton was .867 going into game 6.

Yea, but it's you. That's why I asked for the stats. I wouldn't let you analyze a pee wee game.

Both well under .900.

Series was definitely not decided by the "outstanding" goal tending. I would be more comfortable paying Niemi 2.5 plus if he had more than ONE NHL YEAR.
