There are monster bands from the 60s and 70s that virtually no one recalls now, let allone 200 years from now.

I highly doubt that in 2214 Sirus is going to have a 1970s channel

You said only tho

I'm talking music. Their cultural influence is there, but people mistake that with their music. Anytime you challenge that, people go off the deep end.

Whether or not their music is overrated (in terms of how good it is) is entirely subjective.

When I said influence I meant their musical influence, not a cultural one. Musically, they're easily the most influential band that's ever existed.

You know who's underrated? Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio. Related story to Blackmore. I saw Deep Purple around 10-12 years ago at Loopfest and they advertised it as the original band. Imagine my surprise when Blackmore wasn't there and they had some hack playing guitar that couldn't hold Blackmore's underwear. It was disappointing, the guy was butchering their songs. At least Nugent and Skynyrd were there to save the rest of the day.

The Beatles are another overrated band. Their influence can't be denied, and it's another band that I do like, but people go off the deep end with them. The Rolling Stones and The Eagles are two more.

Success=overrated?

All you're saying is that you, personally, aren't really into it.

Did I ever claim otherwise? I like them, I think they're overrated, then everyone goes nuts reinforcing why I think they're overrated. Vicious circle.

Is that how we rate bands, by how many people can sing along? It's very easy to say they're overrated. Vast amount of people agree they're the best band band of all time and go apeshit when you challenge that.

There's no such thing as the best band of all time just like there's no such thing as the best restaurant dish of all time or the best color of all time. It's merely a matter of taste.

Objective Beatles observation: The Long and Winding Road is terrible.

Another: almost every young band/musician has at one point rated the Beatles their favourite group.

It's hard to be overrated without success, unless your Jay Cutler.

I guess. My point really is that I don't know too many Stones or Eagles fans that are over the top about the band being the greatest thing ever.

Frankly, I don't really care for 99% of the Beatles music. Yeah they were influential but all they did (early on) was make pop music out of blues/rock. IMO they are more right time, right place, than creative genius'. I don't know.

It also doesn't help that Lennon was one of the most insufferable douchebags ever.

I understand what you mean. I personally agree with you on thier music; I like a lot of it but if I had to list my favorite bands, they'd be a good ways down the list.

For the Stones & Eagles, I just look at their entire music catalog and a greatest hits double disc is good enough for me. Like Mick said, it's entirely subjective, but they get rated very highly, by critics at least, nowadays.

Zep always topped the list of music for me. Not just rock, but music in general. I can listen to them all day everyday. I listen to all kinds of music though, and I'll listen to a lot of shit to see if I like it. I can't take country, so outside of the obligatory "country sucks," I don't comment much on it because I couldn't tell you what makes a good or bad country song since all of it is bad to me.

I just want to point out that Nirvana was huge before Kurt Cobain killed himself. I was a big fan then, and saw them live. I don't see them as an over-rated band, because no one ever talks about them unless something of interest comes up, like the HoF induction, or if Dave Grohl is in the news, or if Courtney Love is in the news. Honestly, I have little/no respect for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame to begin with. But I do like Nirvana a lot. One of the last non-designer bands to have reached diamond certification, despite the lack of promotion.

We used to joke back in the day that you could tell a Nirvana fan from a casual listener, because the Nirvana fan's least favorite song was Smells Like Teen Spirit, but the casual listener still liked it.

I was in HS after Cobain killed himself, and people were still rabid over them. Dave Matthews & Limp Bizkit as well, who I think 100% sucks. It's funny because Smells Like Teen Spirit was the reason I got into them originally. I have all their studio released stuff too, but I don't listen to them religiously or anything. For that time frame and music, I always liked Alice in Chains more than the rest.

Maybe it was because I liked the heroin sound, but soundgarden and AIC were my favorites to come out as mainstream during that period. I can't stand most of the 90s musically.

LOL. I completely forgot about Soundgarden. Speaking of heroin sound, I always liked STP as well. I didn't mind Pearl Jam, but there's something about Eddie Vedder that makes me want to stand in a bucket of water and punch my tv screen while sticking my fingers in an electrical socket.

There's a growing list of things we're agreeing on here.

Alice In Chains and STP rock.
Vedder kind of annoying.
Country music sucks.

I'm 3 for 3 with you there.

I think my favorite of the late 80s/90s alt/crossover rock bands was Faith No More. Angel Dust remains one of my favorite albums to this day.
