Actually you're the one who I think needs a little perspective. Many countries expect you to speak their language. Especially if you want to be a citizen of that country. (Mexico for one, the UK I believe is another) America is probably one of the more accommodating countries to people who don't speak the dominant language.

I was referring to the experience of being a minority culture speaking a minority language. That perspective. But ok.

LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT AMIRITE!

Huge difference. America isn't a native country to almost anybody. It's a giant mixing pot of different cultures and different languages. Secondly, they don't do a very good job of teaching people English. Lastly, it is said that English is the most difficult language to learn.

LOL, do you seriously disagree? You think your Spaniard/Portugese/English ancestors are Native Americans? The vast majority of Native Americans were eliminated because of disease, and the rest of the migrators put the final nail in the coffin. There are very few Native Americans around anymore, hence this not really being a native country to really anyone living here. Pretty much why I laugh when people (whites) get up in arms over shit like this, as well as immigrants.

Some of you guys fucking kill me. I swear. You get upset over dumb shit issues like Sunbiz being upset over some random lady not being able to point him towards the eight pound weights, and basically not being able to eavesdrop on another's conversation. Why anyone would care so much about an issue that effects .01 % of your livelihood is beyond me. You guys act like someone else not being able to speak your language is some life altering situation for you.

If someone wants to be at a genuine disadvantage by not knowing the majority language of the country they live in, why do you give a ****? It's not like these people are holding high level positions that effect you on a daily basis.

We have different views of "native" apparently. I was born here. Henceforth I'm a native. If you were born here I would consider you a native. This is the dictionary definition like it or not.

I find it funny you think "Native Americans" are the only true natives. Even they migrated from other places over the course of history. At some point almost all ethnic groups are the result of a migration from one place to another.

To be fair, this is a very stupid thread. Whoever the OP was, was being an over-sensitive whining nancy.

My apologies for getting annoyed when some other culture feels the need to force it on me.

While it's not a thing that causes me too much concern, I think it's more a matter of pride than anything else. If you ever see a Mexican talking to another Mexican, they'd consider it a big sign of disrespect if the other answered them back in English when they started speaking to them in Spanish. Same holds true for others whether it's French, Italian, German or whatever. So rather than help one another out and learn the language together, they much prefer to stick with their native language out of pride, which is a silly thing.

Our education system surely isn't the best but I do know free English classes are offered basically everywhere so if any want to learn, the tools are readily available. You can see some people, who come to the country not knowing English, learn it very quickly, inside of a year while others can be here 5 years or more and still not know anymore than they did when they first entered the US. I have to wonder how that's even possible cause in that amount of time you should pick up a working knowledge even if by accident.

Long time ago, when I visited various places in Europe, I found a lot of the natives in those countries could speak a good amount of English and they were happy to accommodate me so it's not something I'd get down on people for but I can't understand how so many can't see the benefit of learning the language of the country they are choosing to live in.
