Breaking news from Schefty telling all of us what the smart fans already knew....

That they are reporting this though means the Bears have enough serious bidders now that they can play them off each other, instead of pretending they might keep the pick to drive market price up...
Spot on MJY! We all knew the true value was with all the teams who were in the mix to trade up for a QB.

The reports that the Texans are open to dealing second and the twelfth overall, and then the quick backpedaling that "actually maybe they just want Derek Carr!" makes me think that's the deal on the table.

Its almost impossible for another team to reasonably beat that offer, since the Bears still get to trade down with another team for 2024 and 2025 picks while essentially creating a firewall at twelfth overall. The Colts would need to throw in considerably more than fourth, thirty-sixth and 2024 first rounder to match that from the Texans.

IF the Bears can land the second and twelfth overall picks from the Texans, that puts the Bears in fantastic position so long as 2 of the 1st round prospect quarterbacks ball out at the combine. Other than perhaps Anderson, I don't see another prospect that really jumps out at being top 10 worthy this draft. Meanwhile, I see a ton of value in round 2.

If the Bears can somehow execute a double trade down, first with Houston and then with another team for the #2 overall pick, and grab 2-3 extra 2nd round picks in addition to the expected first rounders, I think that would really be the most ideal outcome, especially if you want to use those picks to focus on rebuilding the offensive and defensive lines.

I sure hope he meant "this offseason" regarding Poles, cuz judging from last off season, it was nothing to write home to about considering our needs and what we got.
Thing is, the needs this past season were never meant to be met

Keeping Cunningham gives me more confidence. Any info they can rip off of what Roseman has been doing, I'll take it.
I’m sure there’s tidbits Cunningham knows as far as traits, scouting, and the process but the blueprint is pretty obvious.

Accumulate picks
Build up the OL/DL
Give the QB weapons

Pretty good strategy

What Schefter put out isn't anything earth-shattering. Is that groundbreaking reporting?
Most logical fans expected as much.

That they want to trade the pick at the combine is pretty newsworthy.

A lot of the chatter happens when everybody is together, if the objective is to trade down multiple times you can't play around. There's the combine and the major pro days so if you're looking to do this 2/3 times with an eye for that Houston pick, you gotta be proactive here.

Poles would be making a blunder if he traded out this early. It would have to be a Rickey Williams or Herschel Walker type of trade but with future 1sts included as well.

He tore it down last year

The rebuild truly wasn't going to start until this offseason so I dont see what the hell you people are complaining about. He said it all last season, that was the foundation

If Houston offers second and twelfth that's it. Poles just pulls the trigger and sits pretty for the next couple months knowing that once its known which quarterback Houston is going to select first overall he'll have quarterback-needy teams who whiffed in free agency looking to grab their guy at second overall. It doesn't matter whether Houston goes for Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young, CJ Stroud or Will Levis; it still leaves three guys left over and it is almost certain that some team will think one of those three is their guy and they need to do whatever it takes to get them.

At the end of the day the Bears very easily get the same haul for second as they would have for first and a shot at someone like Lukas Van Ness, Devon Witherspoon, Paris Johnson Jr., Myles Murphy etc. for their trouble. There's obviously a chance it doesn't play out like that, but its still very much worth the risk.
