I do infact love how the cub fans think that there is no way theo can comeback, and that the cubs have all this leverage and should just say **** it and make the red sox sweat. do you honestly think the red sox care about that shit....i mean cmon now with all this fodder. if theo goes back to the red sox it wouldnt be the worst thing for them. oh and just because they promoted a new GM doesnt mean the cubs have all this leverage because of that too. The red sox can do what they want, they still have him under contract, and if they dont like the return.....they will hold on to him......dont forget the cubs are under a bit a pressure too since the WS is about to start and the offseason is around the corner wih no GM officially in place.
You do have a point that the Red Sox have some leverage, but it's probably not as much as you think. Unless it is literally a conspiracy theory to destroy the Cubs orchestrated by Theo Epstein, there's almost no way this deal falls through. For one, they would be screwing Ben Cherington, who would then have incentive to leave. For another, the Red Sox have not-so-subtly (not in words but in tone) thrown Theo under the bus, so at this point, unless Theo is a machine, he's going to feel like he's in a toxic work environment. Thirdly, if the Red Sox don't agree to a fair deal, Theo will stew for a bit, they'll pay him the $7MM, then he'll leave anyway and the Red Sox get nothing from the Cubs even though the Cubs farm system is full of shit. There's no pressure to do anything with respect to the World Series...there are off days, and even if not, I don't think any major transactions, especially of the free agent kind, can be made. For folks afraid that Theo won't have time to do his magic if they wait so long, you've got to wonder what kind of expectations they have for Theo when the supposed savior of your franchise can't multitask and learn about his new job before he takes it. Also, if he's almost certain to take the job as soon as the Cubs and Sox agree to compensation, don't you think they have a messenger ferrying certain information to Theo in the interim?
I guess we all have to wait and see, but I think the Cubs have done this right in waiting it out and the Red Sox position isn't all that strong.
