The Cubs can go the trade route and I think will/should.

What is the alternative to CJ Wilson though? Buerhle is going to command a pretty high salary to head anywhere but St. Louis or stay on the south side, and he is older than CJ Wilson with a ton more innings thrown. Does anyone really think Edwin Jackson is a better option? Internally we have Garza, Dempster, Randy Wells, Andrew Cashner, Casey Coleman, Jay Jackson, and Trey McNutt. Does anyone really feel comfortable counting on those names to fill out a rotation?

I don't think we land CJ Wilson given his list of priorities, but we will see I guess.

I think that to fill that last rotation spot is via trade. John Lackey intrigues me, however I'm not sure that that is the right path to go. Javy Vazquez on a one-year deal is also interesting. He can still pitch and on just a one year deal, we'd have a rotation spot open for a big FA next year. There are a lot of interesting options out there.

James Shields of the Rays is said that he could be available, but will cost and don't know if the Cubs will pay and nor should they.

If Friedman comes as the new GM, I could see Shields coming for a lower price. Plus he would be reunited with Garza.

From what I get, there's a 0% Friedman will come.

I wanted Shields last year. I can only imagine what they'd want in return.

Right now, I'd agree. If Theo doesn't come, I'd say the chances would increase.

Well here's a little something I am going by, could be more speculation, but sounds pretty positive. We have heard nothing 'bout Friedman and I doubt we will. It has to be Theo, right? If it's not, I'll be surprise.

I have always had the mind-set of a trade for the proven player and give up the prospects g. If there is a proven player available who is good why not give up a couple 20-25 year olds who could never pan out and most likely wont. Then of course we could have missed out on our Castro's and our......Who other great prospects have we had in the last 5 years. hmmm.

Last week I would've disagreed with this, but now I have to agree. Epstein is too good of a GM to pass up.
How did Epstein become a better GM in your opinion within a week

If the Cubs don't get him, there is nobody out there available that would do much to help. Friedman is going to stay in Tampa, Cashman's working out a new deal in New York, Beane's staying in Oakland. Outside of those four, there's nobody that I believe can build a winner. Maybe that's just me. I don't trust an unknown or guy with "potential". Now is not the time for the Cubs to gamble. Not after 103 years.

It may surprise you that Esptein Friedman and Cashman all started....as assistant GMs before getting their big gig.

I know they did. Lucky for the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox they were successful. If the Cubs were to hire an assistant, you never know what could happen. After seeing 103 years of losing, I wouldn't be too optimistic about seeing success. If they were to hire an assistant, I'd give him support and hope for the best. Just wouldn't be my first choice, that's all I'm saying.
