This whole secretive act by Jed and Theo is stupid IMO. I understand that you want to keep your moves a bit under wraps, but to sit there and lie and play coy to cover up what you're doing is horse shit. It makes you look like a high school girl that's cheating on her boyfriend.

nah - it's just their way. And it's worked in the past. twice in the last decade, actually.

Why show your opponent your hand when you don't have to?

I really think that Fielder wants to be a Cub, but is getting more money offered from somewhere.

Why else is Fielder and the Cubs going around the dance floor so much?

I think the most likely scenario is that Prince Fielder and Scott Boras are shooting for the moon, and nobody will offer it. The most logical destinations either already have their guy, have publicly stated they don't want him, don't have the money for him, or don't want to surrender to Boras' demands.

Texas makes sense but I think their offense will live without Fielder.

Seattle has a 1B need and probably some money lying around but they're in pretty bad shape as a franchise so they'd need more than just Fielder.

Ditto with the Cubs, but because the front office is aware that the club may have to suck for a while before it gets better, they aren't desperate.

The Toronto Blue Jays may throw money at Yu Darvish instead if they are the rumored high bidder.

So that leaves Seattle as the only desperate party, and if all the Cubs have to do is outbid the Mariners...why not wait it out?

Who says they are?

What I meant by going around the dance floor was all the media reports of being interested, not interested.

Most of the time I think these things are using the media to send a message.

As for the continuous reports linking the Cubs to Fielder, to me they are the same as the reports that incorrectly had them in the Albert Pujols market -- driven by agents and reporters trying to fill the information void created by a surprisingly low level of interest in the two free-agent first basemen. If the Cubs wanted to sign Fielder, they already would have done so.

Don’t overlook the role that Bryan LaHair is playing in this process. Unless Epstein/Hoyer find a way to unload Alfonso Soriano on the Orioles, Mariners or Indians, Fielder would do what Epstein/Hoyer have said they won’t do: block an organizational player who is ready for a chance.

I don't think they view Bryan LaHair as anything but a stopgap. Dude's almost 30 and a career minor leaguer, no matter how well he did in AAA the last couple seasons, I don't think he's in the long term plans unless the Cubs think of him as Matt Stairs Lite.

Yeah, LaHair doesn't fit the mold of an "organizational player" to me. That's more along the lines of them not signing someone to block Brett Jackson etc.

I'd also like to see that "organizational player" quote to get the context.

If Theo isn't signing Prince Fielder in general because it might block Bryan LaHair....I'd be afraid he hit his head on the flight from Boston

Sounds like Phil Rogers made up stuff this week again.

On LaHair, Epstein continued: "He's an asset. We'll have to take a deeper look. … There's more to this game, especially in the National League, than just swinging the bat. We'll dig deeper on that one. But, look, we're looking for assets. We're going to scratch and claw and do everything in our power — in the draft, internationally, small trades, waiver claims. We need to build assets because we don't have enough of them. We're not going to look past one that might be sitting right there in our organization.''
Chicago Cubs: Theo Epstein has open mind on roster - Chicago Tribune

That may be where he is getting it from but ti doesn't mention anything close to what Rogers is mentioning. Sure Epstein will take a look at LaHair...but being apprehensive to signing Fielder to a logical deal because of Bryan LaHair?

lulz.

Epstein wouldn't be handing Fielder a megadeal if Bryan LaHair was on the roster or not. It's a non-starter.

The Rizzo deal starts to make more sense in one aspect if Theo does like LaHair even as a stop gap measure. Get Rizzo, Lahair keeps 1st base warm..Rizzo takes over.

However, if Epstein does feel the team needs pitching(as he mentions above) then trading Garza doesn't make a ton of sense.

Fans don't like the hidden aspect of what Team Theo are doing, but it's better for the club. Fans just want to know what they're doing, so we could see which way they want to go. Since being a fan, I know and it does suck. However, the hidden aspect of Team Theo is for the best.

Maybe the Cubs are talking about Rizzo and letting it leak out in the news... to try and lower the princ for Fielder. The M's and Cubs seem like real threats, with the Rangers in it. I could see a Angel snatch for the Rangers.

The Angels? I don't think they'd spend that freely
