I think those are Boras' comments to try to establish a market for Fielder. Too lazy to Google right now but I am fairly certain at some point he asked for that long of a commitment, though no one really knows if it's tongue-in-cheek or if he was serious.

Don't you think he'd have signed already if he had received a 10-year offer? No one is going to give him 10... I doubt anyway. But then again, I didn't think anyone would give Pujols 10 either....

Exactly, nobody is crazy enough to give out a 10-year offer to Fielder which is why he's still on the market. This may benefit the Cubs because they won't have to overpay and they won't have to pony up for non-productive years of the contract. The Cubs might decide to just wait this one out. Fielder isn't getting Pujols money, and he also isn't getting the years, so when the other bidders flame out, the Cubs can go in with a more reasonable offer.

That's the hope, anyway.

I think 7/175 gets it done

I would be fine with that because he will be 35 when the deal runs out and if he is still hitting we can deal him to an AL team that can DH him.

This is a statement move that the Cubs need to make and I am hoping they make it this week.

Possibly more than you will ever want to know about Prince Fielder, courtesy of Scott Boras:

Scott Boras has a 73-page book on Prince Fielder | HardballTalk

Bruce Levine is less positive we are signing him,

Bruce Levine (1:31 PM)

Keep your eyes on Scott Boras. He will be on center stage over the next two weeks trying to bring home a boatload of cash for the Fielder family for Christmas. Not sure if the Cubs are really in it. All indications are that they are not, but Theo has surprised people in the past. Thanks everybody.

For either Chicago teams the past few offseasons the Chicago writers and media don't get many scoops.

Just for the hell of it I'm gunna take a wild guess...

The Cubs will sign Fielder to a 6 year contract woth 150-160 million with a option for the 7th year. To me, the Rangers are the only other team that could land Fielder. I say the Rangers sign Darvish for a lot of money and don't want too throw as much to land Fielder. He'll be signed anywhere in the 20's of December.

The Cubs sign Garza to an extension and wipe out his arb years. He's the player to evolve around. The Cubs will also sign pitcher Joe Saunders to a 2 year contract later this week or early next week.

Finally, the Cubs will make a big push for either Cespedes or Soler. Soler looking more like an option. This year he plays in minors, then when Byrd leaves in the off-season, his spot will be awaiting.

Just wild guessing lol.

I don't think it makes sense to pay Fielder almost as much as Pujols is making, to be honest.

Agreed which is why he only gets 7 but really is a $25 million per player and Boras knows it

At this point, I'd be really surprised to see the Cubs sign Fielder. May just be my pessimism about the Cubs, but I think the Rangers will pony up the cash and give him the offer with the most $$$.

I like the plan.

I would really like the Rangers to sign Darvish and take themselves out of the Fielder runnning and limit the suitors.

Cubs Sign

Prince Fielder 6 years 156 million [26 average]
Hoenis Cespedes 5 years 55 million [11 Average]
Joe Saunders 1 year 8 million

I think you underestimate how desperate the Cubs are for someone to market around and make them better than hot garbage while they rebuild. The optimism surrounding Fielder will buy them some more time.

Without Fielder

1. DeJesus
2. Castro
3. LaHair
4. Byrd
5. Soto
6. Stewart
7. Jackson
8. Barney

125 Losses.

So the second worst winning percentage of all-time? Nah... 100 maybe. Not 125. That's silly.
