From a Biggs article:

I called an executive with another team. He has nothing to do with the Smith situation, but I wanted to pick his brain about the Bears’ dilemma.
“He’s a good stack linebacker,” he told me. “He’s not a top-five linebacker for me. Not right now anyway. If I was the GM or coach, I would say: ‘We want you on this football team. We think you have a bright future on this team. But we have to see you play in this defense first before we start talking about a contract. If you go out there and make plays and you become Shaquille Leonard, we’re going to pay you. This is a new team. New system. New way of doing things. We can’t give you money based on where someone else drafted you and for what you did on tape in another system.’
“My top five stack linebackers? Shaq Leonard, Fred Warner, Demario Davis, Micah Parsons and I still love Lavonte David. I thought De’Vondre Campbell was better than Roquan last year. He made more plays. Better player? I don’t know. Roquan has better traits (than Campbell), and that’s what you get into. In terms of the traits perspective, Roquan is the guy everyone in the NFL is looking for off the ball. He is a three-down player. He has coverage traits. You can scheme him as a blitzer and he’s got ridiculous pursuit speed. He’s got every trait you want. The thing you wonder about … is he a game changer? He might be in this scheme. He hasn’t played in it yet.”

My favorite teams
  1. New York Mets
  1. New York Knicks
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. New York Rangers
  1. Syracuse Orange
So your saying Fields hasn’t improved or developed at all?
He's changed his throwing motion and his lead foot when taking the snap. That's what he's improved on so far, so yep he's improved but has he developed? We'll see. Odd that it's so hard for you to understand this. It's like the Poles underwhelming offseason debate with you all over again.

Very interesting take, rather contradictory though

Doubt you get a response to this. I am apparently the only other person that is not convinced that Leonard is a better player and it should be obvious to anyone that Roquan turnover #s will go up in this defense. He won't have the number of FF but he will get turnovers and I would bet we will see a decrease in Leonard's if they are changing systems over there.
I am not saying Roquan is better overall but he does a lot of things better and is only statistically better at seemingly everything except turnovers.

Yeah it is funny. A month or 2 ago Bears fans were talking how Quan is underrated and got snubbed for the Pro Bowl and is arguably the best off ball LB in NFL.

Now he isn't really that great and they focus just on turnovers to justify it. Yet Jaylon Johnson is a stud despite having less Ints at CB than Quan has at LB the last two years.

Suddenly stopping the other team and forcing punts and not giving up a TD in coverage the last 3 years doesn't mean anything.

I think they are both overrated by bears fans personally

Some Bears fans were. Probably the ones that want to hand him a blank check.

So much wrong about this statement.

1. Not really a new system as both Desai and Flus played nickel 75-80% of the time. Their responsibilities for off ball LBs in nickel are not drastically different.

2. Playing WILL in a cover 2 is far easier than playing 3-4 ILB and made for a guy like Quan. Pretending there is some huge risk or projection here is laughable. WILL covers up Quan's biggest weakness which is taking on blocks so any objective estimate of his performance in this D would suggest he plays better not worse.

3. Quan has better stats than most of those guys. He lead the NFL in stops and has given up 0 TDs in coverage the last 3 years. I repeat 0 TDs the last 3 years.

Well the takes most of us hear are other Bears fans takes…. Which are rooted in fandom and not rooted in facts and certainly not expertise.

No facts were presented in that article. Just the opinion of someone. The facts are Quan led the NFL in stops with 93 and has given up 0 TDs in coverage the past 3 years.

Nah some people have done an about face on him now that he wants to get paid.

I totally get not wanting to pay him. What I don't get is suddenly shitting on the guy to justify not paying him. Quan is a great player. Quan may not be worth what he is asking to Poles and the Bears.

Who’s shitting on Quan? If someone thinks he’s the 4th or 5th best LB instead of #1 is that “shitting” on him? If someone wants to pay him 2nd or 3rd best per year is that “shitting” on him?

There’s always exceptions but I think 95% (or more) of Bears fans want Quan here long term, or at the least think he’s a very good player. We just don’t all agree on how much to pay him. And not everyone thinks he’s hall of fame bound. But “shitting” on him? C’mon….

To be fair it is almost never the best player at a position that gets paid the most. Just whoever signed a contract most recently. Which will continue to be the case until the salary cap quits rising.
