Looking like McCutchen is being traded to the Nationals. You have to wonder, at least in the short term, if the Pirates will continue to be a contender in the NL Central or if it's the Cubs and Cardinals and not much else. I do like what Milwaukee is doing but have to figure they're at least a year or so away.

For who? Last I saw is they wanted the Nats top prospect.

So... does anyone know what happens to the teams that are now on penalty for IFA signings? The new rules state $6 million per team per year. Does that mean the cubs and every other team start fresh next year?

While I love what Baez can do defensively, this would be a great time to trade him if you can use him to headline a deal for an arm like Archer. That's good value for the Cubs in terms of the long term, especially if you can hang on to Happ and Eloy.

Who's the backup then if Russell or Zobrist goes down?

Reinsdorf wont trade with the Cubs

Which is why he's one of the most over rated owners in professional sports history. His teams are always crippled with in-fighting, dysfunction, public spats, and consistent treadmill mediocrity. The White Sox have missed the playoffs 30 times in his 35 years of ownership.

And while he made one excellent hire in Jerry Krause to run the Bulls (who brought in PJax, Pippen, Grant, Rodman, Kukoc, etc) -- if he didn't inherit the greatest player in NBA history, he'd have exactly one championship ring in 70 years of owning two professional sports franchises.

The Cubs could avoid trading Baez by doing this:

Tb sends Archer to Cubs
Cubs send Arrieta to Red Sox
Red Sox send top prospects, Cubs send lower level prospects to TB.

We essentially swap pitchers and get younger and more cost controlled. This way we only have to worry about replacing Lackey after 2017. And we would likely only lose guys that are blocked like Candelario instead of Baez.

Why put more value on prospects when you pretty much know what you have in Baez, who is still improving?

There's some lack of detail here, and I don't think it would be quite that simple, but it's a pretty good working theory. The Red Sox beat writers have brought up Arrieta a lot as a bridge to some of their young pitching prospects if he were to become available.

It's not unusual for teams in the same city not to trade. The Mets dont trade with the Yankees. The Phillies never traded with the As. Been going on 100 years

I would trade Baez, Soler, Rondon and Montero for Archer and their closer. This closes 2 needs

Well there are going to be guys gone no matter what including Fowler, Hammel, Coghlan, Wood and likely Chapman. So whatever team heads into 2017 will be a new team regardless and will likely come with new challenges. This pitching staff hasn't had and significant injuries in 2 full seasons. That just doesn't happen so expect it again is to court disappointment. I guess my view of baseball is teams build a core group and then shuffle pieces from season to season. I'd still like to see that young pitcher they keep coveting and of course beyond Rizzo and Bryant who the core is depends on who you ask. I would add Contreras and Schwarber to that simply because in Contreras' case catcher is such a hard position to fill well and the fact Schwarber's bat looks truly special. Everyone talks about a possible Baez trade but frankly if someone wanted Russell for the pitcher you want and we would then slide Baez to SS I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. I frankly have no idea which one will have the better overall career. I will say that in light of the World Series win none of these questions bother me quite as much as they have in years past. I trust in our FO and everything else is just the enjoyment of speculation.

The addition of Baez is steep. I'd be inclined to subtract him and add Ian Happ and young arm like Clifton but maybe that doesn't get it done. I would think your proposal would almost certainly get it done.

This reminds me of a trade I suggested when I was 9 years old. Outside of Baez why would TB want this pile of shit and on top off it you want their closer. Trades need to make sense for both teams and the other team isnt stupid.
