Timing of this..
Tender and Russell statement makes me wonder if this is what the organization was looking for from him , to make a public apology and admit his doing, in order to offer the tender and keep him this year..

I've been saying all along since theo's year end presser this is exactly what I expected. I don't think the org. really had a choice. Now sure maybe if he said **** you i'm not admitting anything they consider non-tendering him but who would do that? Like this apology costs him nothing. Frankly, if he's reps are smart they will actually make him the face of change. People love a redemption story. If he becomes a strong proponent for charity in this area you really think MLB wouldn't use him in ads? Goes back to the old saying all coverage is good coverage.

Now this is.... interesting. Realmuto has 2 fewer years of control than Contreras does. But the difference here is he's a way better framing catcher and just as good offensively. If you were to deal Contreras + something minor for Realmuto.... i mean that's really interesting and sorta works for both sides i think. Cubs get a more well rounded catcher. Miami gets a replacement ready now who may be close to as good as Realmuto but with more control.

Think their gonna make some surprising moves to help the offense

I did not need to see an apology, especially one written the day he was about to get non tendered. I guess you see if therapists can turn him into a real man.

Written or released? I'd suspect this was coordinated with the Cubs.

Well, the "greatest free agency year in baseball history" has been a fucking snoozefest so far.

It feels far fetched but Contreras is at the bottom of the heap in framing. I would get it if they did though. I'm guessing Contreras and others added in as a return. On his twitter he has the Cubs at 5%. Astros are the most likely destination.

Well when Kershaw didn't re opt it did lower the flame. I think that teams are gearing up for the meetings on the 10th.

Weird... cubs non-tendered Torreyes. I have a tough time believing this was really a case of them wanting to hear something from Russell though I suppose that is possible but even then it's still a really weird move because NY was going to non-tender him anyways. I'm guessing they end up just giving up cash rather than PTBNL so not a big deal but doesn't seem to make much sense.

Dont know who else has been non tendered throughout the league, but wonder if there someone else available now that they prefer...

Schoop maybe.... Chris Owings is also out there. Nothing else seems that obvious. Could just be they didn't want to pay him arb and would prefer to get him on a minor league deal but idk

That what I've been seeing, is that it possible they couldn't agree to something but he still may resign with them

Something I hadn't quite considered that brett from BN brought up jokingly was Hamilton came up as a SS. I wasn't in favor of trading for him because of cost but if he'd sign for say $1 mil he's kind of an interesting guy to take La Stella's role. Every year they go out and get a real speedster for the playoffs. He's a switch hitter who hits RH better but still poorly and plays pretty good CF defense. You could in theory move Happ into more of an infield role and have Hamilton as your 4th OF but play him sparingly with Happ/Zobrist also seeing OF time depending on the situation.

I'd like the idea a bit better if I knew for sure he could reasonably play a utility role at SS/2B as well. I mean he probably can but I don't know how well so I'm hesitant to suggest it. IDK it was another thought i had when I saw Torreyes non-tendered.

Even if he can just play all 3 OF spots, he may be worth a shot as a 4th OFer , late inning defensive guy or pinch runner ..

If Theo plans on changing it up a bit offensively, his speed on the bases late in games can make a difference

Well it happened right after they offered Russell. It could have been a leverage play on their part to get him to fall in line.

But it could also be related to the Reds non tendering Billy. I see Billy as a clear upgrade to Torreyes. Sorry speed is sexy.
