Something I hadn't quite considered that brett from BN brought up jokingly was Hamilton came up as a SS. I wasn't in favor of trading for him because of cost but if he'd sign for say $1 mil he's kind of an interesting guy to take La Stella's role. Every year they go out and get a real speedster for the playoffs. He's a switch hitter who hits RH better but still poorly and plays pretty good CF defense. You could in theory move Happ into more of an infield role and have Hamilton as your 4th OF but play him sparingly with Happ/Zobrist also seeing OF time depending on the situation.

I'd like the idea a bit better if I knew for sure he could reasonably play a utility role at SS/2B as well. I mean he probably can but I don't know how well so I'm hesitant to suggest it. IDK it was another thought i had when I saw Torreyes non-tendered.

Well with Russell back Billy would be decent at 2B with Baez at SS. It would add wheels at the top for sure.

Now I really doubt both were related because that is kinda a leap of faith thinking Billy will just sign. But if it happens.

I disagree that he'll be back. I think he's gone and I think everyone knows it around baseball. The reason why Theo won't release him now is that he still could add value to a trade. There is no guarantee they'll be able to move him but Theo will try. If he can't do it he'll be non tendered by the 12/1 deadline. I excpet this to be the most active offseason since the window opened.

Wrong!

Looks like he has never played 2nd in the majors. Why are you people trying to force him into that role?

Who are you talking about?

Interesting. Billy was a SS/2B in the minors and the Reds converted him to CF. Cozart and Phillips were at his IF positions. Choi was at CF. Choo: October 31, 2013: Granted Free Agency. Came down to a opening/payroll reduction.

He never played the OF until 2013 in the minors so it was a forced decision because Choo was just a rental.

I’m pretty sure that Joe would move him around to get his speed into games. But his CF D is equal to Almora.

He is a mixed bag for sure:

It seems, however, that the organization simply no longer feels that the benefit of Hamilton’s glove and premium baserunning skills are worth the lack of offense that has become synonymous with Hamilton’s name. Though he was long touted as one of the game’s premier prospects due to his 80-grade speed, Hamilton has mustered just a .244/.297/.332 batting line in five seasons since becoming a regular with Cincinnati back in 2014. That production is even more questionable when considering the fact that Hamilton plays his home games in Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park, which is one of baseball’s most hitter-friendly settings; both OPS+ and wRC+ indicate that when adjusting for that hitter-friendly home park, Hamilton’s offense has been a full 30 percent worse than that of a league-average hitter.

To his credit, Hamilton has stolen more than 50 bases on four different occasions and, even in a “down” year in that regard, swiped 34 bags last season. He’s also delivered a whopping 51 Defensive Runs Saved in Center Field, which is largely backed up by a +45.5 Ultimate Zone Rating in his big league career. Statcast’s newest outfield defensive metric, Outs Above Average, only goes back three seasons but still feels that Hamilton has recorded a staggering 52 outs more than a league-average center fielder would generate, based on catch probability data.

its been a pretty funny off season. People google Fields and show how he fits on a role, then Clarkson gets picked up, he will do great here, now Torreyes and...............now hes gone too.

I think the reds position with hamilton was pretty simple, he was great for them as long as he was not going to make alot of money.

He played SS in the minors as mentioned. It's not so much trying to force him into the role as wondering if he could be a utility player. The reasoning here is that as solely a back up OF he leaves something to be desired. I mean he's not an amazing hitter. But if he could be that last guy on the bench who you can plug into several positions throughout the year, the speed he has is something they always go get anyways. So, if you could carry it throughout the year instead of just in the playoff lead up it would be nice.

I would go

Rizzo
Bryant
Schwarber
Baez
Heyward
Contreras
Zobrist/Almora/Russell
Pitcher
Hamilton

If I was working a line up with him. Honestly the OBA is ass so you really don’t want to give him that extra AB every day but hitting 9 with Rizzo up next you can cause some major issues if he works on bunting/slapping over the drawn in.

Didn't we basically see this lineup last year..lol

I would hope Theo plans on doing more to the offense then just adding Hamilton this off season

Yup, this is the lineup that choked last year and is hardly near the top of the league talentwise.
