Ain’t no way BYU deserves to be above Tennessee

Oregon, Texas, Miami, Boise State and BYU would get automatic bids as 5 highest ranked conference champs.

After that it is probably OSU, PSU, IU, ND, Bama, Ole Miss and now Georgia over Tenn.

So if any of the 5 highest ranked conference champs are ranked lower than Tenn, they would bump Tenn from the playoff due to their automatic bid.

Yes to be to get that higher ranking, they actually have to win the big 12 first. They haven’t done that and I imagine the playoff committee is going to drop them about 10+ spots for losing to a 3-6 team. At home. The committee doesn’t rank teams based on them “potentially” winning their conference championship game. They base them on what they have done so far.

I could see a Bama fan thinking that since the Vols knocked off the Crimson Tide. However, Tennessee lost to a mediocre team in Arkansas and they lost to Georgia too. Kansas was ranked coming into the season and beat Iowa State (who will be ranked) and BYU. Plus, Kansas barely lost to Illinois and Arizona State. Both of those teams will be ranked later today. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kansas win at home against the Buffaloes. We will see. It’s a fun time of the year.
The committee doesn’t give a **** on where a team was going into the season. That’s like saying Clemson should get a push for beating Florida State. They only care about where the team is at the moment they beat them or lost to them. I’m an Irish fan first and a begrudgingly Bama fan second as my wife’s family had a relative play for bear bryant many eons ago.

Between NIL, Saban retiring and the switch up in the playoff format so much is changing so fast that it’s very hard to figure all this out. Everyone, including the committee, seems to be just winging it.

Indiana is undefeated 10-0 and beaten the two teams who played in last years title game. Most years that would be a nearly unbreakable case for the top ranking, This year they are ranked behind three one-loss teams including Penn State.

No, but somebody from the Big 12 is getting in and its probably going to be over a more worthy team from the SEC or B1G.
Well yes. Even at 11-1(USC should beat them to end the year though), I don’t think the Irish deserve to get in either. Big 12 only deserves 1 team and the same with the ACC. You could make a case as to why PSU shouldn’t be in it as they haven’t proven much either. We do know that the committee does respect all of the various computer metrics, so those will also be taken into account. (Saragin, FPI, RPI, etc)

Yes they are definitely winging it, it seems. Problem with IU is their SOS victory is around 100 in the country. I imagine they get in if they keep it close at Columbus next week. If they get blown out, it just might be all she wrote.

The margin of victory matters and Penn State has blown everyone out of the water. Their only loss came to Ohio state by 1 score. Also, I would not sleep on Kansas. If they beat Colorado in Kansas then they will have won 3 in a row. We should get a good gauge on the CFP rankings when the Coaches and AP polls come out in a few hours.

It doesn't matter who it is though. If CO beats BYU for Big 12 then it will be them bumping Tenn if they are the 5th highest ranked conference camp but ranked out of the top 12.

Or it could be that a BYU loss means Clemson or SMU becomes the 5th highest ranked conference champ out of the ACC.

In any scenario where the 5th highest ranked conference champ is not ranked in the top 12 already then they will bump someone in the top 12 out. That team currently is Tenn as they are currently expected to be the lowest ranked non-conference champion in the top 12.

Also, with NIL and the portal, every year is going to be filled with surprises. Parity is finally here in college football and many, many preseason Top 10teams will fall on their face and many in preseason unranked teams will be in the playoff at the end of the year. Winning the recruiting wars will mean little if teams don’t keep their talent for 3years. TAMU apparently had one of the greatest recruiting classes of all time in 22(?) and most of those players have already left campus.

Indiana is certainly fools gold. They are the oldest team in the B1G and avoided playing Oregon, Ohio State, and Penn State. They also didn’t play Iowa, Illinois, or Minnesota who round out the top 7 in the Big Ten. Next year they will get smoked. They’re only this good now because their new head coach brought at least 10 of James Madison University’s best players. Plus, that team is littered with 5 year seniors from the Covid season. Thus, being the oldest team. I actually expect Texas A&M to get in easily. I expect the Aggies will win at home against Texas. There are some great games down the stretch. Nobody really knows yet and that is the fun of it.

Right, because beating Michigan and Washington has gone from Herculean task to kind of a pedestrian distinction.

I do not like that Indiana’s entire playoff fortunes hinge on this one game when you see all sorts of second and third chances for other teams.

Yes I don’t disagree with where they end up if they win their conference. I’m looking at the rankings when they come out Tuesday. I can’t even guess on what the final rankings will be because the SEC, Big 12 & ACC are all giant clusterfucks right now. Big 10 should be resolved if OSU handles IU(likely result).

They should do away with CCG’s and just make it a 16 team playoff. South Carolina is playing some damn good football right now but they won’t have a chance to get in. Don’t overlook the possibility of GaTech upsetting UGA in Athens to end the year. Georgia isn’t great at stopping the run and if Beck starts throwing picks again, they could pull it off albeit it isn’t likely to happen. BYU/KSU/ISU all choking basically guarantees only 1 entry into the playoff for the Big 12, and it just might be Colorado that makes it in.

Yeah forgot Miami is ACC so the guaranteed conferences that likely have a winner finish ahead of Tenn are Big Ten, SEC, and ACC as if Clemson or SMU win the ACC they probably jump into top 12.

So that leaves the Mountain West, Big 12 and AAC. Boise State needs to win out and they probably stay ahead of Big 12 and AAC winner. If BYU, CO or KSU win Big 12 then they probably stay ahead of AAC champ for 5th spot.

As for AAC, Army has ND next week so if they win that and then beat 25th ranked Tulane in the conference championship they could really leapfrog the Big 12 or Mountain West champ if one of those winners falters. Tulane has a lower chance given they don't face anyone ranked except for Army in the AAC championship.

I believe the SEC is likely going to be the winner of Texas/TAMU vs Alabama. Ole Miss shouldn’t overlook Florida because Napier seems to be figuring things out and DJ Lagway is like a much superior version of Anthony Richardson. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Florida pull that one off but it’s likely going to be a higher scoring affair.

Wouldn't sleep on Kansas for what? The Motor City Bowl? They have six losses. If they lose to Colorado they won't even make a bowl.

More broadly, there just aren't any really good teams this year. The tourney will be a free for all, with probably 9 of the teams having a legit chance to win the whole thing. Should be really fun.

I thought Indiana's next game is against Ohio State?

I think he meant they have avoided them so far. Obviously that changes this next week.
