I understand your point, but giving the conference winners that bye is really the only objective way you could do it. Beyond that they had to throw a bone to Big 12 and ACC teams who are more likely to have a down year conference wide than the SEC.
It would be very easy to just take take the top four teams in the CFP rankings and give them the bye.

There’s just no perfect way to select these 12 teams. 4 different(maybe 5) SEC teams could easily win the PAC-12, ACC, Big 12 and the group of 5. When the final 12 are selected, I’m betting 2 to 3 teams(from anywhere in the country) will have a legitimate gripe in not getting in.

These last 3 weeks will be crazy and I expect some big upsets this weekend. Ole Miss, ND, TAMU, BYU(not sure if favored), Bama should all be on upset alert.

I don't disagree with you, I'm suggesting that it was easier to get conferences like the Big12 and ACC on board with this by giving a bye to their conference winner.

Realistically if you wanted the best twelve teams in the country those conferences would be left out all together. A lot of people’s concerns with the new playoff have been quelled, Oregon almost blew it against Wisconsin in Camp Randall and it could’ve jeopardized even their bid for it. The NCAA should be in a position where it can impose its will on straggler conferences who should feel lucky to be included.

That's the thing though, the NCAA is a dinosaur and a superconference asteroid is heading its way. The only way they can try and impose their will is through uneven and unreasonable fines, suspensions, and sanctions.

You do know what the word basically is, right??

And so your defense of Colorado is that their conference is so trash that they might not beat out the American conference champion for the auto spot?? Thanks for proving my point that Colorado doesn’t really belong

No my defenze of Colorado is they are 8-2 and they are ranked 16. Your personal opinion about what they deserve is irrelevant.

Colorado would be great to have in it even if they don’t deserve it. I’m ambivalent on Deion, some of it annoys me and some of it is genuinely fun, but he adds an element for sure.

But they should not get a bye, which is looking distinctly possible right now. That’s a flaw in the system that should be addressed, it should just be the best four teams in the country getting byes. I think it’d be a lot of fun to have teams like Army, Boise State, Colorado involved in the first round but a two-loss Colorado team getting a free ticket to the quarterfinals while two-loss SEC teams get left out in the cold all together? Yuck.

They dont want the best 12 teams. They want the 12 teams that deserve a chance to prove themselves.

Tennessee already had a chance to prove they are one of the best SEC teams. If they arent good enough to make the conference championship and win then tough shit.

By contrast a team like Army who is undefeated shouldnt be left out just because they play in a weak conference and should have a chance to prove that they are still one of the best teams even if their conference sucks. That is especially true if they beat No 9 ND and No 20 Tulane.

I think its more fun to have Colorado in the playoff than the fourth best team in the Big Ten, but there’s really no argument at all that they are even slightly deserving after losing to Kansas State and Nebraska without having a single quality win. Indiana beat Nebraska by fifty, if they lose to Ohio State tomorrow and get left on the outside looking in while Colorado makes it they will have some cause for griping.

So you’re saying if Army loses to #9 and #20 to finish with two losses they shouldn’t be in, but Colorado with two losses to Kansas State and Nebraska (both unranked, both decidedly mid) should?

Can confirm.

I think I watched more of them last season knowing they were going to be bad than I have this year when they are clearly a better team.

If they win their conference tournament then they are deserving if they are one of the top 5 conference champs.

I mean taking this logic to the extreme why have divisions in the NFL. Is it fair the Bears have to play in a tougher division than other teams? There are years when an NFL division champ has a worse record than a wild card team and the division champ still host the wild card team with a better record.

Conference Champions matter. Sorry.

My two cents, I don't think that there are any powerhouses out there like years past. I believe that you can take the top 12 and then add another 10 or,20 teams and still they would all be competitive. Things have changed a lot over the last year or two. Any given week is the way it is now. It's not Alabama 50 Opponent 0 anymore.

You could make a case that 10 teams have a legitimate chance to win it all. It’s never been that way.

OK but Colorado is not one of the twelve best teams in the country and really it’s not close.

People complain about Indiana not beating any quality opponents…well Indiana absolutely smoked the same Nebraska team that beat Colorado.
agreed. if indiana gets dog walked by OSU this weekend, their playoff hopes may vanish. yet, colorado who also hasnt played anyone but lost to that bad nebraska team, could get in with 2 losses

make it make sense lol
