I'm not arguing that it wasn't a giant misstep for Poles not to bring in Daniels. What, did he think he was going to hurt Caleb's feelings? As if a guy like Caleb can't handle the notion that the Bears are looking at more than just him? What, he'll collapse or something? It was utter nonsense and sure looked like the definition of confirmation bias. Great QBs in this world have always been about competition and the notion that somehow, this would be helping Caleb, that he'd do better his rookie year if he was the only one brought in? Just so dumb.
I believe Poles spent last off-season attempting to prove to Caleb and his father that the Bears were only interested in drafting him, and the Bears were serious about building a winning team. This is why Daniels wasn’t looked at, and also why the Bears foolishly traded a 4th round draft pick for Keenan Allen.

Around that time, there were rumors about Caleb refusing to play for the Bears and Caleb also kept speaking about wanting to be drafted by a winning franchise (paraphrasing).

I had the opposite view....Poles was so stuck on Caleb that Mr. Williams realized he had all the bargaining power and asked that the standard rookie contract be 'waived' and that Caleb should get 10% ownership of the Bears or something like that. Poles brought it all on himself, IMO. Neophyte gonna neophyte.

Yes, I can even read on bit farther where the author contradicts himself. This is all just speculation anyway.

Also, the Titans would offer more than $30m/2 years? Or are you saying that PIT is going to offer Russ more than they would Fields?
Kaloby has been pretty spot on from what I have gathered regarding the Steelers.

Last week he reported that the Steelers were more interested in retaining Fields (Link) and now it's that Fields is going to suspected to get better offers elsewhere.

The Steelers don't have a ton of cap space and need a bonafide WR (they've been linked to Higgins) so it makes sense that they have a budget for their QB position and it's possible based on what Kaloby is reporting that Fields could fetch more than Wilson or prefers a separate opportunity.

Darnold to me makes zero sense for the Raiders - he's just not a schematic fit and the Raiders. If they hired someone from the Shanny/McVey tree then I'd see it but Kelly is a wildcard. The likelihood that they'd be able to get Darnold to outperform a $35-40m contract is pretty darn low.

If Wilson doesn't re-sign with Pitt - I am keeping an eye on Vegas for him. The Raiders seem like exactly the type of organization to do whatever in their power to convince themselves they are not rebuilding.

Glazer rules out the Raiders for Russ and thinks they're not bringing him back to Pittsburgh, Glazer doesn't think Fields winds up there either. Talked about Darnold and wasn't sure if he hits FA.

I bet they're gunna target Kirk and use that extra money to go after Higgins. If Darnold isn't a FA that really helps Justin's market and I guess I could see Russell going to the Giants as a bridge QB?

Kirk is a big gamble unless they KNOW he's coming. Higgins may not want to sign on the prayer that they also end up with Kirk. Timing may be tricky.

We know Caleb was going to play for whoever drafted him, Poles knew that, anyone could tell those talked about narratives were bs. But it's probably a good point as to one of the reasons Poles never brought in Daniels.

Whatever decision Poles was going to make, and the vast majority of GMs would have taken Caleb, not bringing in Daniels and getting to know him more was just asinine.

One of his many head scratchers.

If you preferred CWs play and he gives a great interview, there really is no reason to do more. Right or wrong, in that situation, an interview wouldn't have changed anything.

I don't see Raiders and Fields as a match if Brady has a say. Their games couldn't be more different.
In my opinion you have fiduciary responsibility to bring in Daniels, no matter what u think of Williams.

If u bring him in and your opinion doesn't change, fine.

But u bring him in.

I was posting in August that Darnold was going to have a Baker type of year because QB play is highly dependent on the situation in which they're in and the Minnesota offense has an elite offensive head coach, good OL and excellent weapons.

And the return that Poles got for Fields to me reflects Poles' mismanagement of the situation more than it reflects Justin's value in the NFL and like I said - in a few weeks we'll see what opportunity and contract Justin gets.
That’s ridiculous. “Mismanagement”?

Tell me who the suitors were for Fields.

At no time did Williams or his father ever ask for a percentage of ownership. That rumor floated long before the draft and it was shot down as not a possibility long before the draft. So if you heard that he got drafted and asked for ownership you heard from somebody who doesn’t have a clue.

The Raiders, Steelers and Falcons were rumored to have interest - the reality is that it all went down during "lying season" and it's impossible to say who had strong interest. But a 1st round price tag absolutely drove teams interest down.

What I do know is that Fields was better for us than Darnold was for the Jets and the Jets got a 2nd, 4th and 6th for Darnold while in a similar situation.

Currently - Russini came out today and said that Russ is finished in Pittsburgh and it looks like they'll try and sign Fields.

With respect to this year, the Fields market is on the rise. He put up solid numbers last year — per sample size/all time best for him actually — had a winning record and showed growth. Add in the fact that this past season Caleb Williams having significant difficulties only emphasized dysfunctional the Bears are at developing QB’s — which only increased the intrigue about Fields/with many realizing how poorly he was handled here.

It looks like the Steelers want him as their starter. I would slow play them and let a bit of a bidding war start with multiple teams likely to show interest once free agency starts. Take the highest offer combined with the best situation.

Well, obviously, every GM in the NFL felt that fields was not better in Chicago than Darnold was in New York or the offers would have been similar.

Or they felt he had more potential. Or one GM overpaid for Donald and other GM’s refused to do so for field.

You are offering proof of exactly the opposite point you were trying to make.

Why am I talking about this? It’s like talking to flat earthers.

My sense coming out of New Orleans is that the door is open for a potential deal between the Steelers and free agent Justin Fields, but it would have to make sense for Fields, who, at this stage, will most likely want a more legitimate chance to start a full season.

Plus, Fields could have a sneaky good market and price himself out of Pittsburgh.

It's appearing that Fields will have suitors this off-season.
