So who the hell is Darnold going to pass to now? JSN and Bobo? Yikes. Draft?

It just seems like the Steelers didn't trust that Fields was the guy

I assumed that to be the case when he was benched with a 4-2 record for a painfully mediocre Russell Wilson.

Jets are a great spot for him to return to QB1 status, they even have one of his former Ohio State receivers IIRC. I wish him all the best and he's gonna need it because it's still the Jets.

That isn't a big contract for a starting QB, though. If the Steelers really wanted him and thought he was the guy, they had the bandwidth to outbid the Jets.

There were some reports leading up to this that Fields wanted assurance from the Steelers that he would be the starter. The fact that that may have been a conversation, again, tells you what the Steelers thought about Fields.

In the OP, there is an interview with the Steelers owner. If you read it, you will see that their plan was to lowball Justin from the very beginning. I admit that I wanted Justin to take the lowball offer simply for the continuity of the offense and organization.

The Steelers plan backfired and they lost a young quarterback that they really liked, and will now have to settle for a washed psycho that will undermine Mike Tomlin every chance he gets.

$20M AAV after 5 games played. Yeah he had more value than a 6th round pick.
How do you come to that conclusion? Do you really think that paying him half the rate of top quarterbacks proves that they would’ve been willing to give up a high pic for him?

Pittsburgh just being Pittsburgh, guys. They've done this in the past.

Tomlin may have wanted Rodgers even though he's declined. He did the same with Vick.

Yeah, the Steelers made it very clear. At 4–2 they still benched him and when they struggled, they didn’t switch from Wilson back to field. Then when he wanted them to commit to him being a starter, they said bye-bye. The team that had him in the building and knows him best chose to move on even without a clear answer as to who they are moving to.

I also thought that, but there is a subset of people who still think he wasn't benched. They think Tomlin just promised Wilson the starting job and was always going to go with Wilson.

This is despite the fact that Tomlin himself said that, while Fields was doing a good job, he wasn't doing a great job and the Steelers will need more if they're going to go far and he wants to see what Wilson could do.

Then, when the season ended, Tomlin was talking about how it's possible to find a QB later in the draft (citing Lamar jackson among others), which pretty much tells you that Tomlin's plan was to look and draft a QB sometime in the near future.

If they truly viewed Fields as the guy, he'd be a Steeler right now.

and this certainly doesn't preclude the Jets from selecting a QB at 7 or potentially moving up from 42 into the 1st round to select one.

He was only benched because Russ was promised the starting job, which is why he signed there for peanuts. Multiple other teams wanted Russ also.

Not happening. Maybe they will draft a backup to Justin Fields in the 6th or 7th round.

I hope Fields does well. Breece Hall is underrated as a runner and Fields will help open things up for him there.

At #7 in the draft and having just drafted Olu Fashanu last year, it seems like Membou would be a lock to go there and play RT.

Hard to blame Fields. Gotta grab every bit of the bag while you can.

There's an argument to be made that the 2025-and-beyond Jets will be better than the 2025-and-beyond Steelers. I'm just not buying it, though.

Life changing money. Generational wealth type money. He would have been foolish to pass that up…. especially considering the Steelers were playing hard ball plus Tomlin has already shown he is not fully committed.

Go to where you are loved.

Add to it the life changing bread and this was a no brainer

He also has the stigma of bring a losing QB, you’d think he’d want to break that but again he got his money

That Jets roster has a lot of top end talent.

Wilson, Hall, Sauce, Q Williams, Olu and the 7th overall pick.

All are top 10 talents at their position & most are premium positions.
